The Impact of AI on Tech Industry Layoffs
Sudden Job Losses
On June 3, Aaron Damigos received an unexpected calendar invite for a meeting with HR, his manager, and upper management. This meeting led to his abrupt termination from his role as a web support associate at Microsoft. In early June, Microsoft reportedly laid off around 1,000 employees, citing long-term strategic shifts.
AI’s Role in Layoffs
Experts agree that AI will reshape the labor market, but it’s unclear how. Nick Bunker, director of economic research at Indeed, states:
“AI will reshape the labor market. It’s just not clear how it will reshape it.”
While AI is not yet replacing most workers, the current layoffs indicate that AI hype can lead to job losses.
Other Companies Following Suit
Dropbox
In April 2023, Dropbox announced 500 layoffs. CEO Drew Houston acknowledged AI’s role in this decision, stating:
“In an ideal world, we’d simply shift people from one team to another. And we’ve done that wherever possible. However, our next stage of growth requires a different mix of skill sets, particularly in AI and early-stage product development.”
Meta
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also emphasized AI investment in a post in February, stating:
“A major goal will be building the most popular and most advanced AI products and services.”
Google has been investing heavily in its Anthropic AI developments. CEO Sundar Pichai warned of continuous cuts throughout 2024, which began in January. Despite reporting strong growth, Google aims to simplify structures and reduce bureaucracy to focus on innovation.
Historical Context and Worker Impact
This shift towards AI mirrors past trends like outsourcing, which led to poor working conditions for contracted workers. Parul Koul, president of the Alphabet Workers Union-CWA, notes:
“It feels less like there’s a real connection between investment in AI and trade-offs having to be made in other parts of the workforce, but really that this is a narrative shift being used to package a shift that predates the move to AI.”
Current AI-Driven Layoffs
AI-driven layoffs are still a small portion of job cuts across industries. According to a report from Challenger, Gray, and Christmas, over 5,000 jobs were cut between May 2023 and April 2024 due to AI.
Tech Industry Layoffs in 2024
In 2024, nearly 100,000 layoffs occurred in the tech industry, according to Layoffs.fyi. However, job openings for AI roles or those requiring AI skills made up 12% of all tech job offerings in May, the highest percentage in six years, according to CompTIA.
Future Implications
Tim Herbert, CompTIA’s chief research officer, believes AI will create adjacent jobs needed to support the new technology:
“AI will probably spur investment in other areas.”
Parul Koul emphasizes the need for up-skilling and retraining employees:
“There are ways in which the existing workforce can be kept whole or treated with dignity and respect through this process. More opportunities for retraining and moving people to other divisions would be very welcome.”
