New UK Regulations Target Big Tech for Fair Competition
Introduction
The UK is set to impose significant fines on major tech companies that fail to adhere to new regulations designed to foster competition in digital markets.
Strategic Market Status (SMS)
Only companies identified by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) as having Strategic Market Status (SMS) will need to comply with these rules. These SMS companies include digital giants like Apple, Google, Meta, and Amazon.
Digital Gatekeepers
The legislation introduces extensive requirements for these digital ”gatekeepers.” Unlike the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers (DMCC) Act will evaluate whether companies are adhering to the new regional rules.
“The UK could subject big tech companies to hefty fines if they don’t comply with new rules meant to promote competition in digital markets.”
