Google Introduces Government App Labels in Play Store to Combat Fraud
Google is now implementing labels in the Play Store to identify legitimate state and federal government apps in over 14 countries, following an extensive testing period. This new feature aims to help users distinguish between genuine apps and those that impersonate official apps to commit fraud or steal personal information.
Widespread Coverage and Collaboration
The company has revealed that these badges currently encompass more than 2,000 apps across various countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Indonesia, India, and Mexico. Google has collaborated closely with governments and their developer partners to integrate these apps with the new badges.
Identifying Genuine Government Apps
Users will now see a “Government” badge on official apps in the Play Store. Tapping on the badge will display a message confirming that Google has verified the app’s affiliation with a government entity. The badge will also be visible in app lists such as “Top Charts.”
Addressing Fraudulent Apps in India
In India, Google has encountered issues with numerous fake central and state government apps appearing on the Play Store to deceive users. The introduction of government app labels aims to mitigate this problem and protect users from falling victim to such scams.
Reinforcing Play Store Policies
Google emphasized that the Play Store’s existing policy already prohibits apps with deceptive descriptions, misleading icons, or screenshots, particularly those claiming to be official apps without proper authorization. The company’s rule regarding deceptive behavior clearly states:
Apps that falsely claim affiliation with a government entity or to provide or facilitate government services for which they are not properly authorized.
Developer Requirements and Best Practices
To ensure the safety of users, Google requires developers to provide proof of sufficient permission to process government documents. The company also encourages governments to use official email IDs when creating developer accounts on Google Play for publishing apps.
The introduction of government app labels in the Play Store is a significant step towards protecting users from fraudulent apps and ensuring a safer, more trustworthy app ecosystem.

Finally, I won’t accidentally download a sketchy app pretending to be official!
So, it took Google this long to figure out we don’t want fake apps? Progress, I guess.
Who knew Google cared about us finding the real deal? A surprise, indeed.
