Google Introduces Interactive Language Learning Feature in Search
Google is piloting a new “Speaking practice” feature within its Search platform, aimed at assisting users in enhancing their conversational English abilities. The feature, currently accessible to English learners in select countries who have joined the Search Labs program, offers an innovative approach to language learning through AI-powered interactive exercises.
Engaging in Everyday Scenarios
The primary objective of this experiment is to help users improve their English skills by engaging them in interactive language learning exercises. These exercises, powered by artificial intelligence, focus on using new words in everyday scenarios, providing a practical approach to language acquisition.
Speaking practice expands upon a feature Google introduced in October 2022, which allowed English learners to practice speaking sentences in context and receive feedback on grammar and clarity. The new feature takes this a step further by incorporating back-and-forth conversational practice.
The feature was first spotted by an X user, who shared screenshots of the functionality in action.
Conversational Questions and Targeted Responses
Speaking practice operates by presenting the user with a conversational question that requires a response using specific words. For instance, the AI might tell the user that it wants to get into shape and then ask, “What should I do?” The user would then need to provide a response that includes the words “exercise,” “heart,” and “tired.”
This approach aims to help English language learners engage in conversations while understanding how to use different words correctly in context.
Potential Competitor to Language Learning Apps
The introduction of this new feature suggests that Google may be preparing to compete with popular language learning apps such as Duolingo and Babbel. This is not Google’s first foray into language learning and education tools. In 2019, the company introduced a feature that allowed Search users to practice proper word pronunciation.
As Google continues to invest in language learning features, it will be interesting to see how the company positions itself in the competitive landscape of educational technology.
