NHTSA Launches New Investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot Feature
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated yet another investigation into Tesla‘s Autopilot feature, adding to the growing list of probes surrounding the controversial driver-assistance system. The latest inquiry comes on the heels of a comprehensive report by the NHTSA that examined hundreds of accidents and 13 fatalities allegedly linked to Tesla’s Autopilot.
Tesla’s Response to Safety Concerns
In an effort to address the issues highlighted by the NHTSA, Tesla introduced a software update in December aimed at enhancing driver attentiveness when using Autopilot and Autosteer. The update includes increased warnings and alerts to remind drivers to remain vigilant while utilizing these features. However, the agency noted that some of these remedies are optional, allowing Tesla owners to opt-in and even reverse the safety updates if they so choose.
Scrutiny of Tesla’s Latest Software Update
The new investigation will focus on a range of Tesla vehicles, including the Model 3, Model S, Model X, and Model Y, spanning from the 2014 to 2022 model years. Notably, the Model Y — Tesla’s best-selling electric vehicle — is also subject to this probe.
This is not the first time Tesla’s software update has come under scrutiny. Missy Cummings, a robotics expert and former NHTSA senior safety advisor, expressed concerns about the update, stating that it “doesn’t go far enough to prevent misuse or address the root causes of driver inattention.”

As the NHTSA continues to investigate Tesla’s Autopilot feature and its potential role in accidents and fatalities, the electric vehicle manufacturer faces mounting pressure to ensure the safety and reliability of its driver-assistance systems.
