Rediscovering the Magic of Old-School Photography with Mood.camera
A Nostalgic Approach to iPhone Photography
In an era where phone cameras have become increasingly sophisticated, with advanced image processing and granular controls, many photographers still yearn for the charm and simplicity of old-school photography. Developer Alex Fox tapped into this nostalgia when creating the Mood.camera app for iPhone.
Capturing Photos with Retro Filters and Adjustable Settings
Mood.camera allows users to capture photos using a variety of retro filters, reminiscent of classic photography styles. The app provides a dial to adjust the quality and tone of the images, as well as the ability to switch between different lenses and control exposure directly from the main screen. While these features may sound familiar, what sets Mood.camera apart is the absence of a live preview, which adds an element of surprise and anticipation to the final developed photo.

Focusing on the Moment, Not the Filters
According to Fox, the decision to omit a live preview was intentional, encouraging users to focus on the image in the viewfinder rather than the effects. The app also lacks an editing feature and does not allow users to import photos from their gallery to apply filters retrospectively. Fox explained:
“Since the first Polaroid camera, photography has been focussed on more convenience and more control, but I think we’ve lost some of the magic along the way. Some of the design decisions I made were intended to reduce the conveniences we’re used to, urging users to be in the moment instead of worrying about which filter to use or staring at their phone editing.”

From Prototype to Beta Release
Fox began working on a prototype of Mood.camera in October 2023 and released a beta version on Reddit earlier this year.

Refining the App with the Help of Photographers
Over the past two months, a group of photographers assisted Fox in refining Mood.camera by capturing more than 100,000 photos. The app offers a free seven-day trial, after which users can opt for a monthly subscription of $1.99 or a one-time payment of $14.99.
Retro-Inspired Photo Apps: A Growing Trend
In recent years, several apps, such as Lapse, Dispo, and Later Cam, have attempted to recreate aspects of retro cameras by imposing limitations on app functionality. While Lapse and Dispo attracted investors, their growth eventually slowed. However, for an indie developer like Fox, the goal is not necessarily venture-backed success, but rather the potential to transform the app into a sustainable income and a long-term passion project.
