Amazon Music Introduces AI-Generated Playlists with Maestro
In the wake of Spotify’s recent foray into AI-powered playlists, Amazon has unveiled its own take on the concept with Maestro, an AI playlist generator now available for testing by U.S. customers on both iOS and Android devices within the Amazon Music app.
Creating Personalized Playlists with Prompts and Emojis
Maestro allows users to generate custom playlists by entering spoken or written prompts, which can include activities, sounds, emotions, and even emojis. For those struggling to come up with ideas, the app offers a selection of suggested prompts at the bottom of the screen. Within seconds of submitting a prompt, Maestro generates a playlist tailored to the user’s input.

Beta Launch and Availability
As Maestro is currently in beta, Amazon acknowledges that the AI technology powering the feature may not always deliver perfect results on the first attempt. The company has implemented safeguards to prevent the use of offensive language and inappropriate prompts, although it’s likely that some users will attempt to circumvent these barriers over time.
Unlike Spotify’s AI generator, which is being tested in the U.K. and Australia, Maestro is initially available to a subset of free Amazon Music users, Prime customers, and Unlimited Amazon Music subscribers on iOS and Android devices in the U.S.
Premium Features for Subscribers
While all users can access Maestro, subscribers to Amazon Music Unlimited will enjoy additional features, such as the ability to listen to playlists instantly and save them for later. In contrast, Prime members and ad-supported users will only have access to 30-second previews of the songs before saving the playlists. This differentiation in features may encourage more users to upgrade to the paid subscription if they find the AI functionality appealing, aligning with the growing trend of offering premium AI experiences as paid services, as seen with ChatGPT Plus and Google’s potential plans to charge for AI features in search results.

Accessing and Sharing Maestro Playlists
To use Maestro, users must have the latest version of the Amazon Music mobile app. The option to create an AI-generated playlist can be found on the home screen or by tapping the plus sign to create a new playlist. Users can then input their playlist prompt by speaking or typing, and tap “Let’s go!” to begin streaming. Created playlists can be saved and shared with friends.
Some of the playful prompt suggestions from Amazon include “😭 and eating 🍝,” “Make my 👶 a genius,” “Myspace era hip-hop,” “🏜️🌵🤠,” “Music my grandparents made out to,” “🎤🚿🧼”, and “I tracked my friends and they’re all hanging out without me.”
While no specific timeline has been provided, Amazon has stated that the Maestro beta will gradually expand to include more customers over time.
