X to Remove Paid Users’ Ability to Hide Checkmarks
X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, is set to remove a feature that allowed paid subscribers to conceal their verification checkmarks. The company has begun notifying users of the impending change, although no specific timeline has been provided.
Hiding Checkmarks No Longer an Option
In August 2022, X introduced the ability for Premium and Premium+ subscribers to hide their checkmarks from their profiles and posts. However, the company recently removed the description of this feature from its support page, signaling its imminent removal.
“As a Premium or Premium+ subscriber, you can choose to hide your checkmark on your account. The checkmark will be hidden on your profile and posts. The checkmark may still appear in some places, and some features could still reveal that you have an active subscription.”
Verification Program Evolves
X has been making significant changes to its verification program in recent months. In April 2023, the platform began awarding blue checkmarks to influential users with more than 2,500 verified followers. These users were also offered Premium and Premium+ subscriptions based on their follower count.
This move comes after X‘s owner, Elon Musk, initially removed the legacy verification checkmark in favor of a subscription-based model. However, the company quickly reinstated the blue checkmark for top accounts, essentially reverting the verification program to its original purpose of verifying notable individuals.
Uncertainty Surrounds Exact Timeline
As with many decisions made by X, the exact date for the removal of the hide your checkmark feature remains unclear. Users can expect the change to take effect in the near future, but no definite timeline has been provided.
The removal of this feature is just one of the many adjustments X has made to its platform since Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company. As the social media landscape continues to evolve, users can anticipate further changes and updates to X’s features and policies.
