In the wake of Elon Musk’s acquisition of the social network formerly known as Twitter, a plethora of competitors has emerged, each vying for a piece of the text-based social media pie. From Threads and Mastodon to Bluesky and Substack Notes, the landscape is becoming increasingly crowded. Enter Lyrak, a newcomer that aims to differentiate itself by prioritizing real-time news and offering monetization options for creators, all while embracing the potential of fediverse integrations.
Fediverse Integration: Connecting with a Wider Audience
Lyrak’s unique selling point lies in its plan to integrate with the fediverse, a network of interconnected servers powered by the ActivityPub protocol. By doing so, Lyrak users will be able to interact with a broader audience across various federated social networks, such as Mastodon. Although this integration is not yet live, the team plans to begin work on it in the coming months, allowing for seamless communication between Lyrak and Mastodon users.
The Vision Behind Lyrak: Empowering Creators and Businesses
Founded by London-based web designer and marketer Rishi Siva, Lyrak draws its name from Lyra, a lead character in the TV show “His Dark Materials.” Just as Lyra discovers new worlds, Lyrak aims to build something better for its users. Siva’s inspiration for the platform stems from his experience helping small businesses establish an online presence and monetize their content. With Lyrak, he hopes to further support creators by offering lower fees and sharing 50% of ad revenue with them, in contrast to X’s opaque revenue-sharing model.
Attracting Journalists and Creators: Lyrak’s Strategy
To establish itself as a go-to platform for real-time news, Lyrak plans to attract journalists by offering them the ability to share content with users based on their interests and send notifications to those who regularly engage with their links. Additionally, the platform will cater to creators who sell digital products, with specific tools set to launch in May. Creators will also have the opportunity to offer subscriptions and collect tips from their followers.
AI Tools and Reputation Scores: Innovating the User Experience
Lyrak has plans to introduce AI tools, such as an answer engine and user-generated AI characters, in May. Furthermore, the platform will implement a reputation score system, similar to that of Reddit, which will reflect the value a user brings to the community through their interactions. This score, combined with AI moderation efforts and human moderators, aims to ensure a safe and engaging user experience.
The Advantage of Being a Startup: Fresh Perspectives and Regular Updates
As a startup, Lyrak has the advantage of bringing fresh perspectives to the table, unencumbered by the old ways of thinking that may hinder innovation. Siva and his team of five, mostly based in London, plan to release new features regularly after the initial launch and a period of bug fixes. Currently bootstrapped, Lyrak is available for download on iOS.
