Life360 Introduces Automatic Flight Landing Notifications for Friends and Family
Life360, a leading family location services company with over 66 million active users, has introduced a new feature that automatically notifies friends and family when a user reaches their destination after a flight. The app uses phone sensors to detect takeoff and landing times, and alerts the user’s circle when they reconnect to the network post-landing.
How the Flight Landing Notification Feature Works
The flight landing notification feature utilizes the phone’s sensors to measure location, altitude, and speed to determine if the user is taking a flight. Life360’s algorithms can detect takeoff and landing times, and send notifications to the user’s circle when they reconnect to the network after landing. This feature provides a convenient alternative to online flight trackers or waiting for the traveler to send updates manually.
Enabling and Disabling the Feature
The flight landing notification feature is automatically enabled for all users with the latest app update. However, users can choose to turn off the feature through the Flight Detection toggle in the app’s settings.
New Movement Indicator: Plane Icon
In addition to the existing movement indicators such as walking, running, biking, and driving, Life360 has introduced a new plane icon to represent when a user is taking a flight. This icon will be visible to the people in the user’s circle, providing a clear indication of their current mode of transportation.
Life360’s Focus on Safety and Protection
Chris Hulls, CEO of Life360, emphasized the company’s focus on providing safety and protection updates for users’ inner circles. He noted that Life360’s solution is more comprehensive compared to Apple’s generic approach, and the company has the advantage of being available on both iOS and Android platforms.
“We are going to make a unified hardware lineup that is far more robust than Apple, which is one size fits all. We will have Bluetooth tags and GPS devices with LTE connections, and it will be a more holistic service,” he said.
Upcoming Tile Lineup and International Expansion
Life360, which acquired Tile in 2021 for $205 million, plans to launch a new Tile lineup this year. The company also aims to expand its premium membership to Australia in 2023, following successful launches in Canada and the U.K. in 2022.
