The Eclipse App: Your Ultimate Guide to Witnessing the Total Solar Eclipse
As the highly anticipated total solar eclipse approaches on Tuesday, a user-friendly app has skyrocketed to the top of the App Store charts. With an impressive 140,000+ lifetime downloads across both iOS and Android platforms, “The Eclipse App” offers a comprehensive experience for viewing this awe-inspiring astronomical event.
Features to Enhance Your Eclipse Experience
The Eclipse App provides a wealth of features to ensure you make the most of the total solar eclipse:
- Cloud cover forecasts to help you find the best viewing conditions
- Guides that pinpoint the exact moment of totality based on your location
- Information about local events, parks, and viewing sites in your area
- Parking information for many events
A Collaborative Effort
The app was born out of a partnership between The Planetary Society, an independent space interest organization, and The Eclipse Company, a tech company formed around the time of the 2017 Great American Eclipse to help more people witness total solar eclipses. The companies first put out a user-friendly eclipse map to help people find a viewing spot for the annual eclipse on October 14, 2023.
Revenue and Rankings
Released in the U.S. and Canada in February, The Eclipse App currently generates revenue through in-app purchases, allowing users to pay $3 for a livestream. According to data from Appfigures, an app intelligence firm, there are now roughly 9.8K paying users as of Monday. The app began its App Store climb late on Sunday, gaining 35,000 downloads on the App Store and starting to move up the charts. It is currently ranked first in its category (Travel) and ninth Overall in the U.S. App Store, and eighth in its category via Google Play.
Positive Reception
Reviews for The Eclipse App are mostly positive on the App Store, with 40 5-star reviews vs. 22 1-star reviews, according to Appfigures. However, there seems to be more consumer dissatisfaction with the Android version.
