Apple Allows Retro Game Console ā¤Emulators on App Store, with a Catch
In aā significant move, Apple has revisedā its App Store guidelines, permitting the globalā¤ distribution of emulators for classic console games. The updated rules, announced on Friday, come with the stipulation that developers must ensure compliance with copyright regulations and offer in-app purchase options for downloading ā£titles.
Leveling the Playing Fieldā with Android
Whileā¢ Android users haveā¢ long enjoyed access to a wide array āof emulators for playing classic games on their devices, Apple’s recent update is expected to encourage developers to bring their emulators to the App āStore. This move could potentially bridge āthe gap between the two platforms in terms of retro gaming options.
Monetization and Compliance
Apple has mandated that emulator apps ā¢must utilize an in-appā¢ purchase mechanism for ā¤offering digital items. This requirement aligns with the company’s ongoing efforts to adapt to regulatory pressures and diversifyā¢ its revenueā¤ streams. As Apple continues to tweak its App Store rules in responseā toā£ regulations, the inclusion of retro games could provide an additional source of income.
Expanding āApp Store āOfferings
In January, Apple released its first setā£ of rules to comply with the EU’s āDigital ā¢Markets Act (DMA). Along with the announcementā¢ of allowing streaming game stores globally, the company also updated its App Store rules āto supportā¢ in-app purchases for mini-games, AI chatbots, andā now, HTML5-based mini-apps. This latest update could potentially accommodate services offeredā by super apps like WeChat.
“Apps may offer certain software that is not embedded in the binary, āspecifically HTML5 mini apps and mini-games, streaming games, chatbots, and plug-ins. Additionally, retroā£ game console emulatorā£ apps can offer to download games,” theā clause said.
Addressing Monopolistic Practices
Theā¤ U.S. āDepartment ofā Justice recently sued Apple, ā¤citing the suppression of super apps as one of the five points in the lawsuit regarding the company’s ā£alleged monopolistic āpractices. The latest rule updates could be seen as a step towards addressing these ā£concerns.
Music ā¢Streaming Services Benefit
The updated rules also benefit music streaming services like Spotify, ā¢allowing them to displayā£ information about subscriptions and other digital purchases, as well as include links directing users to their āwebsite āto complete transactions. Thisā¤ change comes after Spotify submitted an update to āthe App Store last month to ā£show pricing information to EU-based users, ā¤whichā had not received approval from Apple for weeks.
Asā¢ Apple continues to adapt its App Store policies in response to regulatory āpressures and market demands, the inclusion āofā¤ retro game console emulators and accommodations for music streaming services demonstrate the company’s āefforts to expand its offerings and maintain its position in āthe ever-evolving digital landscape.
