Nassi, along with fellow researchers Stav Cohen and Ron Bitton, exploited the multimodal capabilities of modern AI systems to create Morris II. These systems can generate images and text, and even engage in dialogue. By crafting specific prompts, the researchers demonstrated how an attacker could manipulate a system into disregarding its safety protocols and generating toxic or malicious content. This technique, known as “prompt injection,” has been previously explored by researchers like Sahar Abdelnabi from the CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security in Germany.
Demonstrating the Worm’s Functionality
To showcase the worm’s potential, the researchers developed an email system that utilized generative AI for sending and receiving messages. They integrated popular AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Open Assistant, an open-source language model. By exploiting vulnerabilities in these systems, the worm could propagate itself through email conversations, highlighting the risks associated with AI-powered communication platforms.
Mitigating the Risks of Generative AI Worms
Experts suggest several approaches to mitigate the risks posed by generative AI worms. Adam Swanda, a threat researcher at Robust Intelligence, an AI enterprise security firm, emphasizes the importance of secure application design and monitoring. He advises against blindly trusting the output of language models within applications. Additionally, Swanda highlights the significance of human oversight, ensuring that AI agents cannot take actions without approval.
“You don’t want an LLM that is reading your email to be able to turn around and send an email. There should be a boundary there.”
Nassi and his fellow researchers also propose various mitigation strategies. They emphasize the need for developers creating AI assistants to be aware of the potential risks and to incorporate appropriate safeguards into their ecosystems and applications.
