Rivian R2 Garners Impressive Reservation Numbers Within a Day of Launch
Strong Community Response
The newly unveiled Rivian R2, a midsize electric SUV with a starting price of $45,000, has already amassed over 68,000 reservations within the first 24 hours of its launch. RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s CEO, expressed his excitement about the vehicle’s strong resonance with the community in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“We are thrilled to see this vehicle resonate so strongly with our community!”
Expanding Rivian’s Lineup
The R2, along with the smaller R3 and R3X models, were introduced at a recent event in Laguna Beach, California. These new additions to Rivian’s lineup aim to provide more affordable options compared to the company’s existing R1T truck and R1S, both of which have a price tag exceeding $70,000.
Low Reservation Barrier
It’s important to note that the threshold for reserving an R2 is relatively low. Interested individuals only need to put down a fully refundable deposit of $100, as stated in Rivian’s preorder agreement. This contrasts with Tesla’s approach when they first announced the Model 3 in 2016, requiring a $1,000 refundable deposit.
Moreover, reservation holders are not obligated to purchase the vehicle once it becomes available. The $6.8 million collected in reservation deposits will be held by Rivian in a separate account designated solely for preorders and will only be released towards the final sales price when customers execute the Final Sales Agreement.
Promising Demand and Future Prospects
Despite the low reservation barrier, the 68,000 reservations indicate a significant level of interest and eagerness among potential buyers to secure their spot in line for the Rivian R2. The company has yet to open reservations for the R3 and R3X models, which are expected to generate even more excitement due to their lower price points.
Rivian has announced that the R2 will enter production in the first half of 2026, an earlier timeline than the initially planned end of 2026. This adjustment comes after the company decided to pause its $5 billion factory project in Georgia.
