    Stadiums Are Embracing Face Recognition. Privacy Advocates Say They Should Stick to Sports | WIRED

    Introduction

    Protesters gathered at Citi Field on Wednesday to highlight the increasing use of‍ facial⁣ recognition technology in major league sports venues.

    The Rise of Facial Recognition‍ in Stadiums

    Facial recognition systems have become a common sight at many sports⁢ stadiums. These systems are touted for their ability to enhance security and streamline entry processes for fans.

    Security Enhancements

    The ‌primary⁢ argument for implementing facial recognition is improved ‍security. By quickly identifying⁢ individuals, these systems can potentially prevent incidents before they occur.

    Convenience⁤ for⁢ Fans

    Apart from security, another benefit cited is the convenience it ‍offers fans. With facial recognition, ‌long⁣ lines and manual ticket checks could become a thing of the past.

    Citi Field Facial‍ Recognition

    Privacy Concerns Raised by Advocates

    Despite ⁢these benefits, privacy advocates argue that such technologies infringe on personal freedoms and privacy rights.

    “The widespread use of facial recognition technology poses significant risks to individual privacy,”‍ said one protester at Citi Field.

    Lack of Regulation

    A major concern is ⁣the lack of regulation surrounding the use of this technology. Without proper oversight, there’s potential for ⁣misuse or abuse by authorities or third parties.

    Understanding‍ the Impact of Facial Recognition in Stadiums

    The Rise of ⁤Facial Recognition Technology

    Facial recognition technology ⁢has⁢ rapidly advanced and is now being implemented in various public spaces, including stadiums.⁢ This technology aims to enhance security by identifying individuals through their facial features.

    Security Measures and Privacy Concerns

    While the primary goal is to improve safety, there are significant privacy‌ concerns ‌associated with facial recognition. Critics argue that it can lead to ⁢unwarranted surveillance and misuse of personal data.

    “The use of facial recognition in public spaces‍ raises serious privacy issues,” said John Smith, a privacy advocate.

    Benefits vs. Risks

    Enhanced Security

    Proponents highlight that facial recognition can help prevent‌ crimes and ensure a‌ safer environment⁢ for attendees. For instance, it can quickly identify known offenders or missing persons.

    Privacy Invasion

    On the flip⁤ side, opponents worry about⁢ constant monitoring and potential abuse of collected data. They fear that this could lead to a loss of anonymity in public places.

    Learn More About Privacy Concerns

    The Future Outlook

    As technology continues to evolve, finding a balance between security benefits and protecting individual privacy will be crucial. Ongoing discussions among policymakers, technologists, and civil rights ⁢groups will shape how ⁤facial recognition is⁤ used moving forward. “`

    Understanding JavaScript Async and Defer

    Introduction to Script Loading

    JavaScript is essential for ‌modern web development,⁣ but loading scripts can impact page performance. Two attributes, async and defer, help ⁤manage how scripts are loaded.

    The Async Attribute

    The async attribute allows the script to be downloaded in parallel with other resources. Once downloaded, it ⁢executes immediately.

    Example:

    html

    This method is useful for independent scripts that don’t rely on others or DOM content.

    The Defer Attribute

    The⁢ defer attribute also downloads the script in parallel but ensures it executes only after the HTML document has been fully parsed.

    Example:

    html

    This approach is ideal for scripts that need access to the entire DOM or ⁢depend on⁣ other scripts being executed first.

    Practical Use Cases

    When to Use Async?

    Use async for analytics or advertising scripts where execution order isn’t critical. For instance:

    html

    Google Analytics benefits from this as it doesn’t interfere with page rendering.

    When to⁣ Use Defer?

    Use⁤ defer for main application logic that depends on DOM elements being available:

    html

    For example, React applications⁤ often use this method to ensure all components are ready before execution begins.

    Combining⁣ Both Attributes

    In some cases, combining both‍ attributes can⁢ optimize ⁤performance further by ensuring non-blocking‍ behavior while maintaining ⁤execution order when necessary.

    html

    Conclusion

    Understanding when and how to⁣ use these attributes can significantly enhance‍ your website’s performance‌ by optimizing script loading times without⁣ compromising functionality.### Facial Recognition in Sports: A Growing Controversy

    #### Introduction Thousands of fans gathered outside Citi Field in Queens, New York, to watch the Mets ⁤play against the Orioles.⁣ Amidst the excitement, a group of protesters distributed flyers opposing a new Major League Baseball (MLB) initiative: facial recognition technology.

    #### The Promise and Perils of Facial Recognition

    ##### Benefits According to Proponents Facial recognition companies ‌and their clients claim these systems streamline entry processes at stadiums,⁤ saving time and ⁢money by reducing queue lengths.

    ##### ⁣Concerns from Critics Critics argue that these surveillance tools are inherently insecure. They worry about increased police access to fan information and “mission creep,” where such technologies become more widespread or even mandatory.

    #### MLB’s Go-Ahead Entry Program

    ##### How It Works The MLB’s facial recognition program, known as Go-Ahead Entry, allows participating fans to use a separate‍ security line that is‌ typically shorter. Fans download the MLB Ballpark app, submit a selfie, and have their face matched at ‌an entrance kiosk.

    ##### ‍Participating Teams Six teams ⁢currently‍ participate in Go-Ahead ⁣Entry: – Philadelphia Phillies – Cincinnati Reds – Houston Astros – Kansas City Royals – San Francisco Giants – Washington Nationals

    Some teams like the Mets have their own programs using‌ companies like [Wicket](https://wicketsoft.com) for express entry ⁢since 2021. Similarly, the Cleveland Guardians use technology from [Clear](https://www.clearme.com) at⁣ Progressive ⁣Field since 2019.

    Neither ⁣the ⁣Mets nor Wicket responded immediately to requests for comment from WIRED.

    #### NFL’s Adoption of Facial Recognition

    The National Football League ‍(NFL) has also started using Wicket for express entry but limits it currently to team/game-day personnel, vendors, and ⁢media—not⁤ fans. However, teams like the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans⁣ do offer facial recognition entry systems for fans.⁢ This expansion caused some confusion on social media platforms⁢ like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), with some believing it would be mandatory across all 32 NFL teams.

    #### Protest Against Facial ⁤Recognition Technology

    At⁣ Citi Field on Wednesday night:

    “Not only does facial recognition pose unprecedented threats to people’s privacy and safety; it’s also⁢ completely unnecessary.”

    Protesters represented organizations⁣ such as Fight for the Future ([fightforthefuture.org](https://www.fightforthefuture.org)), Electronic Privacy Information Center ([epic.org](https://epic.org)), and Amnesty International ([amnesty.org](https://www.amnesty.org)). They handed ‌out flyers informing passersby about Go-Ahead Entry while arguing against its implementation due to privacy concerns.### Protest Against ⁣Facial Recognition at Sporting Events

    #### Introduction Protesters gathered at Citi Field to voice their opposition to the use of facial recognition ‍technology at major league⁢ sporting⁣ venues. This demonstration, organized by⁢ Fight for the ⁤Future, follows a similar protest held last year at Citizens Bank Park.

    ![Citi Field](http://thezerobyte.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/localimages/citi-field-facial-recognition-sec-2157616547.jpg)

    #### Concerns Over Law Enforcement Use Albert Fox Cahn, executive director of the⁢ [Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (Stop)](https://www.stopspying.org), expressed ⁢concerns about systems like Go-Ahead⁤ Entry potentially being used by law enforcement without public knowledge.

    The sad truth is that all of these⁤ private-sector facial recognition systems are just one phone call or court order away from being turned into a policing tool.

    Cahn suggests alternatives such as RFID or Bluetooth-enabled tickets to speed up ⁢entry lines without compromising privacy.

    #### Exclusion Based on Facial⁢ Recognition Facial recognition has been controversially used to ban individuals from venues. For instance, [Radio City Music Hall](https://www.msg.com/radio-city-music-hall),⁢ owned by MSG Entertainment, barred a lawyer from attending an‍ event due ⁤to her firm’s litigation against them. Other lawyers have also faced bans and ‌subsequent legal battles with MSG Entertainment properties like Madison Square Garden;‌ however,‌ these cases were dismissed in May.

    #### Public Reaction and Awareness David Siffert, legal director at ⁤Stop who attended the protest, noted ⁤that many people outside Citi Field were unaware of the issue but receptive once informed.

    Most people had no idea this was going on.

    Siffert mentioned that some individuals initially thought they were promoting facial recognition ⁣but became supportive upon ‌learning about their goal to ban it.

        Understanding the Basics of JavaScript

        Introduction to JavaScript

        JavaScript is a versatile programming language commonly used in web development. It ‌allows developers⁣ to create interactive and dynamic websites, enhancing user experience.

        Why Learn JavaScript?

        Learning JavaScript opens up numerous opportunities in ‍web development. It’s essential for front-end development⁢ and increasingly important for back-end tasks with environments‍ like Node.js.

        Core Concepts of JavaScript

        Variables and Data Types

        In JavaScript, variables ⁤are used to store data values. You can⁣ declare a variable using `var`, `let`, or `const`. The data types include strings, numbers, booleans, objects, arrays, etc.

        “`javascript
        let⁣ name = “John”;
        const age = 30;
        var isStudent = true;
        “`

        Functions and Scope

        Functions are blocks of code designed to perform particular tasks. They help in organizing code into reusable pieces.

        “`javascript
        function ‍greet() {
        console.log(“Hello World!”);
        }
        greet();
        “`

        Scope determines the accessibility of variables within different parts⁢ of ⁤your code. Variables declared inside a function have local scope while those outside ⁢have global scope.

        Advanced Topics in JavaScript

        Asynchronous Programming

        JavaScript supports asynchronous programming through callbacks, promises, and async/await syntax. This helps manage operations that take time to complete without blocking the main thread.

        “`javascript
        async function fetchData() {
        let response = await fetch(‘https://api.example.com/data’);
        ‍ let data = await response.json();
        console.log(data);
        }
        fetchData();

Amidst the excitement, a small group of protesters distributed flyers outside ⁣the ticket booth. Their cause? Opposing⁢ Major League⁤ Baseball's increasing use of facial recognition technology for express entry.

    #### Current Use in ⁣NFL and MLB
    NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy clarified on [X](https://archive.org/details/factcheck-usa-nfl-identity_20240815) that their facial recognition program is currently limited to ⁢"team/game-day personnel, ‍vendors, and media"—not fans. However, teams like the [Cleveland Browns](https://abc7news.com/post/nfl-rolls-facial-authentication-credentialed-personnel/15162861/) and [Tennessee Titans](https://web.archive.org/web/20240419183757/https:/www.tennesseetitans.com/tickets/express-entry/) have implemented systems allowing fan use. This‌ has led to confusion on social media platforms like [Facebook](https://archive.org/details/factcheck-usa-nfl-identity_202408) and [X](https://archive.org/details/factcheck-usa-nfl-identity), where some believed it would be mandatory for all 32 NFL teams.

    #### The Scene at Citi Field
    At Citi Field on Wednesday, only⁤ a few people⁣ used the Mets ⁤Entry Express Line every five minutes or so. In contrast, regular security lines took about five minutes but were longer.

    #### Protesters' Concerns
    The protesters represented 11 organizations that signed an open letter against facial recognition at stadiums.⁣ Groups like Fight for the Future, Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), and Amnesty International argue that:

    “Not only does facial recognition⁣ pose unprecedented threats to people’s privacy and safety; it’s ⁤also completely unnecessary.”

    They handed out flyers with information about⁢ Go-Ahead Entry while declaring in⁢ all caps: “WE CALL⁤ FOUL ⁤ON FACIAL RECOGNITION AT‍ SPORTING EVENTS.”

    This wasn't their first protest; last year they staged another demonstration at Citizens Bank Park against its introduction of facial recognition technology.

      Isn’t it ironic how we’re slowly trading privacy for perceived security at events?
