Upcoming Apple MacBook Pro and Mac Mini Updates
Introduction
Apple is gearing up to refresh its MacBook Pro and Mac mini lines with the new M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips later this year. Other Mac models are expected to receive the M4 upgrade in 2025.
MacBook Pro and Mac Mini Upgrades
MacBook Pro
When Apple introduced the M4 processor in the new iPad Pros, it sparked curiosity about when the MacBook Pro would receive the same upgrade. According to display analyst Ross Young, new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro panels are slated for the third quarter of 2024, suggesting a launch before the year’s end. These new MacBook Pros will feature M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chip options.
Mac Mini
Apple is also planning to refresh the Mac mini this year. Similar to the current model, it will likely come with two processor options: the standard M4 and the M4 Pro.
Future M4 Upgrades for Other Macs
MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro
The M4 chip isn’t expected to be integrated into the MacBook Air, Mac Studio, or Mac Pro this year. These models are anticipated to receive their updates in 2025.
iMac
The iMac’s upgrade timeline remains uncertain. The new iPad Pro, which features the M4 chip, suggests it is up to 25% faster than the M3. The current M3 configurations include 8 CPU cores and 10 GPU cores, while the Pro version has 12 CPU cores and 18 GPU cores, and the Pro Max boasts up to 16 CPU cores and 40 GPU cores.
Additional MacBook Pro Enhancements
Besides the M4 chip, MacBook Pro buyers are also looking forward to a thinner design with an OLED panel similar to the one in the new iPad Pro. However, this upgrade is not expected until 2026.
