The Struggle for Public Restrooms in New York City
The Current Situation
Finding a public restroom in New York City is notoriously difficult. Many restrooms are either out of order or require a purchase at a store or café. This issue is so prevalent that some individuals have created their own resources to help locate public restrooms.
New Initiative: “Ur in Luck”
To address this problem, the city has introduced a accessible restroom via their phones.
“Everyone — seniors, parents with kids, anyone enjoying the day outdoors, needs access to a public bathroom without having to buy anything or beg for a code,”
Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi said in a press release. The city plans to build 46 new restrooms and renovate 36 existing ones over the next five years.
The Importance of Public Restrooms
Quality of Life
While the map is a step in the right direction, it highlights a significant shortfall: 1,000 restrooms for 8 million residents are insufficient. Many areas, including popular spots like Chinatown and Soho, lack public restrooms. Additionally, many of these restrooms close by 4 PM.
Public restrooms are essential for quality of life. Pregnant individuals, children, older adults, and people with disabilities need easily accessible restrooms. The lack of facilities also affects thousands of unhoused people, a problem worsened by the pandemic. Rideshare drivers often resort to urinating in bottles and parking lots due to the scarcity of restrooms.
Libraries as a Resource
One reliable source of public restrooms is the library system. Public libraries across New York offer restrooms without requiring a purchase. Besides restrooms, libraries provide charging stations, educational resources, and a quiet place to relax. However, budget cuts by Mayor Eric Adams have reduced library funding by over $58 million, leading many libraries to close on Sundays.
A Global Perspective
In Japan, public restrooms are available in every train station and are cleaned throughout the day. Restrooms are also accessible in department stores, convenience stores, and parks. New York, a world-class city with endless activities, deserves a similar standard. Sanitary restrooms should be available citywide, ensuring everyone can “go” with dignity.
