Android’s AI-Powered Evolution: Contextual Search and Gemini Assistant
As Google unveiled its latest Android features at the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, it became clear that the OS is undergoing a significant transformation. Powered by advancements in gemini/” title=”AI Reshaping the Internet Landscape: From ChatGPT to Gemini”>large language models over the past decade, Android is now equipped with contextual information capabilities reminiscent of the Now on Tap feature from years ago.
“I think what’s exciting is we now have the technology to build really exciting assistants,” Dave Burke, vice president of engineering on Android, tells me over a Google Meet video call. “We need to be able to have a computer system that understands what it sees and I don’t think we had the technology back then to do it well. Now we do.”
Sameer Samat, president of the Android ecosystem at Google, described these updates as a ”once-in-a-generational opportunity to reimagine what the phone can do, and to rethink all of Android.”
Circle to Search: Empowering Education
Circle to Search, Google’s new approach to mobile search, takes center stage. Akin to Now on Tap, Circle to Search gained attention when it was discovered helping students solve homework problems. Leveraging Google’s LearnLM models, fine-tuned for education, Circle to Search will soon tackle more complex challenges like diagrams and graphs.
Gemini: The Rising Star of Android Assistants
Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, is increasingly overshadowing Google Assistant. Many Android phones now offer the option to replace Assistant with Gemini. When asked about the future of Assistant, Samat clarified:
“The way to look at it is that Gemini is an opt-in experience on the phone,” Samat says. “I think obviously over time Gemini is becoming more advanced and is evolving. We don’t have anything to announce today, but there is a choice for consumers if they want to opt into this new AI-powered assistant. They can try it out and we are seeing that people are doing that and we’re getting a lot of great feedback.”
As Android continues to evolve, powered by cutting-edge AI and contextual understanding, users can expect a more intuitive and personalized experience. With features like Circle to Search and the Gemini assistant leading the charge, the future of Android looks brighter than ever.
