The Gazelle Eclipse: A High-End Electric Bicycle for Comfort and Range
When shopping for electric bicycles online, it’s essential to consider the balance between price and value. Gazelle, a Dutch company, has introduced its latest offering, the Eclipse, marketed as a premium long-range comfort cruiser. This ebike can be seen as a high-end counterpart to the more affordable Rad Power Bikes‘ Radster Road.
Unexpected Comfort in the Details
One of the standout features of the Eclipse is its narrower handlebar, which provides an unexpectedly comfortable riding experience. The attention to detail extends to the paint job, with four hand-applied coats and dimensional shading that gives the bike a sleeker appearance. For those willing to invest in a higher-end electric bicycle, the Eclipse offers a range of appealing features.
Models and Specifications
The Eclipse comes in two models, both featuring an aluminum frame. The T11+ HMB variant is equipped with a Shimano Deore XT derailleur gear, while the C380+ model, which I tested, features an Enviolo CVT gear hub and a low-maintenance Gates belt drive, eliminating the risk of chain drops while crossing busy streets.
Both models are available in step-over and step-through versions, with three frame sizes to choose from. The smallest size, at 46 centimeters, is particularly noteworthy, as Dutch bikes are often designed for taller riders. As someone who is 5’2″, I was thrilled to find a Dutch bike that caters to smaller riders. Additionally, all Eclipse models have UL certification, ensuring they meet safety standards and pose no fire risk.
Bosch Performance Line Motor and Battery
One of the most striking aspects of the Eclipse is its new Bosch system. It features a Bosch Performance Line motor with 85 nm of torque and a massive 750-Wh battery integrated into the downtube. During my testing, I rode the bike for about 45 miles, tackling hills and carrying gear, and only managed to drain the battery to 45 percent. The Eclipse is classified as a “Class 3” ebike, with a maximum speed of 28 miles per hour.
