OpenAI Considers Allowing Explicit Content Generation, Raising Concerns Among Experts
On Wednesday, OpenAI released preliminary documentation outlining its desired behavior for ChatGPT and other AI technologies. The extensive document, spanning over 100 pages, includes a section that suggests the company may permit users to create explicit content using its AI tools in the future.
This potential change in policy has alarmed Danielle Keats Citron, a professor at the University of Virginia School of Law who has extensively researched the issue of nonconsensual intimate imagery. In a statement to The Wall Street Journal, Citron expressed her deep concern regarding the capabilities of generative AI technology, particularly in light of a recent incident in Florida where two teenage boys were charged with creating images depicting their classmates.
Intimate privacy violations, including deepfake sex videos and other nonconsensual synthesized intimate images, are rampant and deeply damaging. We now have clear empirical support showing that such abuse costs targeted individuals crucial opportunities, including to work, speak, and be physically safe.
The Challenges of Moderating Explicit AI-Generated Content
While OpenAI’s current usage policies prohibit impersonation without permission, the company would still need to effectively moderate explicit content generation to prevent misuse by malicious actors, even if it decides to allow users to create NSFW material. The challenges of such moderation were recently highlighted when Microsoft had to modify one of its generative AI tools after it was used to produce and distribute explicit images of Taylor Swift on the social media platform X, as reported by 404 Media.
As OpenAI continues to refine its policies and explore the possibilities of its AI technology, the debate surrounding the generation of explicit content using these powerful tools is likely to intensify. Balancing the potential benefits and risks of such capabilities will be a critical challenge for the company and the AI industry as a whole.
