UK Demands Social Media Giants Curb Harmful Content for Children
Ofcom Proposes Strict Measures to Protect Minors Online
The United Kingdom is putting pressure on search engines and social media platforms to rein in their “toxic algorithms” that expose children to harmful content. Failure to comply with upcoming digital safety regulations could result in fines amounting to billions of pounds.
“Our proposed codes firmly place the responsibility for keeping children safer on tech firms,” said Ofcom chief executive Melanie Dawes. “They will need to tame aggressive algorithms that push harmful content to children in their personalized feeds and introduce age-checks so children get an experience that’s right for their age.”
Safeguarding Children from Inappropriate Material
Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, is demanding that platforms take proactive measures to shield minors from content related to:
- Eating disorders
- Self-harm
- Suicide
- Pornography
- Violent, hateful, or abusive material
Additionally, platforms must protect children from online bullying and dangerous online challenges, while allowing them to provide negative feedback on unwanted content to better personalize their feeds.
Strict Penalties for Non-Compliance
Under the Online Safety Act, Ofcom has the authority to impose substantial fines on companies that fail to adhere to the new regulations. Penalties can reach up to £18 million (approximately $22.4 million) or 10 percent of a company’s global revenue, whichever is higher. Tech giants like Meta, Google, and TikTok could face significant financial repercussions if they do not comply.
Ofcom emphasizes that companies who fail to meet the requirements can “expect to face enforcement action,” which may include blocking access to entire sites or apps deemed harmful to children in the UK.
Next Steps and Implementation
Companies have until July 17th to provide feedback on Ofcom’s proposals before the codes are submitted to parliament. The regulator plans to release the final version in Spring 2025, giving platforms a three-month window to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
