Bluesky Unveils Upcoming Product Roadmap: DMs, Video Support, and More

On Tuesday, Bluesky, the decentralized social network, announced its product roadmap for the upcoming months. The company plans to roll out several new features, including direct messages, video support, enhanced custom feeds, and improved moderation tools.

Introducing Direct Messaging

Bluesky is developing a direct messaging (DM) feature that will initially be integrated into the Bluesky app, separate from the decentralized AT Protocol that the platform utilizes. The company aims to later develop an on-protocol DM solution. The initial version will enable one-on-one chat and provide users with controls to restrict who can send them DMs.

Enhancing Custom Feeds

The social network is also focusing on improving its custom feeds, which allow users to personalize their content. While users can currently utilize third-party tools to expand the capabilities of custom feeds, Bluesky is working on native features such as in-app feed creation, improved feed discovery, a new trending feeds view, and the ability to submit and moderate posts within feeds. Additionally, the company plans to introduce a better way to organize feeds on the home screen.

Strengthening Moderation and Anti-Harassment Measures

Bluesky is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for its users. As part of this effort, the company is developing anti-harassment tools, although specific details about these tools have not been disclosed.

Expanding Video Support and Streamlining Login

In addition to the aforementioned features, Bluesky is exploring ways to extend video support on the platform. The company is also working on an “OAuth” login mechanism, which would allow users to “Log in with Bluesky” across various services associated with the social network. This would eliminate the need for users to remember separate passwords for third-party apps.
