The New York Times Games Launches Wordle Archive for Subscribers
Access to Over 1,000 Past Puzzles
On Tuesday, The New York Times Games announced the launch of a Wordle archive, granting “Games” and “All Access” subscribers the opportunity to explore more than 1,000 previous Wordle puzzles. The rollout, which commenced on both mobile and desktop platforms, is anticipated to span the next several months. In the near future, the Times intends to integrate the archive into its Games app.
Catching Up and Playing at Your Own Pace
The archive, a feature of the popular word-guessing game acquired by the Times in 2022, allows players to catch up on missed puzzles and enjoy the game at their own leisure. Subscribers can navigate through a calendar of past Wordle puzzles, stretching back to June 2021, and track their progress, save their results, and share their achievements with others.
WordleBot: Your Personal Puzzle Companion
Alongside the archive, the Times is introducing WordleBot to the NYT Games app. This personalized companion analyzes completed Wordle puzzles, challenging players to reflect on their strategies and consider alternative approaches to solving the daily brainteasers.
“This expansion is not just about playing past puzzles; it’s about deepening the connection our community has with Wordle and with each other,” said Jonathan Knight, head of Games at The New York Times, in a press release. “We believe this will make the daily puzzle even more engaging and provide even more moments of surprise and delight for our subscribers to share with friends and family.”
The Evolution of the NYT Games App
In March, the NYT Games app underwent a redesign to enhance user experience, making it easier for players to discover new games and monitor their progress. The update, which included revamped game card designs and streamlined navigation, marked another milestone in the company’s efforts to expand its gaming hub. This change followed the app’s rebranding from “NYT Crosswords” to “NYT Games” the previous year, reflecting the growing variety of games offered by the Times.
Impressive Numbers: Downloads and Playtime
The Times reports that its Games app was downloaded an impressive 10 million times in 2023, with games being played more than eight billion times throughout the year. Notably, Wordle accounted for nearly half of this playtime, clocking in at 4.8 billion plays.
