The Rise of Affordable Electric Microcars: A Global Phenomenon
Zhidou Rainbow: The Tiny EV Making Waves
As Tesla CEO Elon Musk steps back from the idea of a more budget-friendly city car, a Chinese company is stealing the spotlight with its ultra-compact and affordable electric vehicle (EV). Enter the Zhidou Rainbow, a microcar that falls into the “kei car” category in Japan, where these diminutive vehicles enjoy tax, insurance, and parking benefits due to their small size.
Despite its compact dimensions, the Rainbow boasts a surprisingly well-equipped interior, featuring a 5-inch digital driver display, a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen, and even a connected smartphone app for charge scheduling.
The Appeal of Microcars: From Europe to the US
The concept of small, economical vehicles has been explored for decades, from the iconic Mini by Alec Issigonis in the late 1950s to the “bubble cars” like the BMW Isetta that remained popular in Britain during the 1960s. While the US market gravitated towards larger vehicles as the economy grew, Europe maintained a strong desire for smaller cars, with models like the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Fiesta enjoying long-term success.
Zhidou’s Comeback and the Role of Chinese Auto Giants
Zhidou, founded in 2006, had previously introduced small EVs like the D1, D2, D2S, and D3 before facing bankruptcy in 2019. However, a restructuring effort led by Geely and Aima Technology Group has breathed new life into the company. Geely, a prominent Chinese automaker, owns brands such as Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus, while also investing in Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz. Aima Technology Group, on the other hand, specializes in electric bicycles, mopeds, and motorbikes, making the Zhidou Rainbow a natural fit for their retail locations.
The Rainbow offers a range between 78 and 127 miles based on China’s CLTC testing standard.
The Future of Electric Microcars
While established automakers may not prioritize microcars due to their lower value, limited performance, and inherent safety concerns, the success of vehicles like the Rainbow and the popularity of the Smart brand suggest a potential market, particularly in densely populated, emerging economies looking to transition from mopeds to four-wheeled vehicles.
Even in the US, companies like ElectraMeccanica are developing electric microcars, hinting at a growing interest in this segment. As Elon Musk and Tesla continue to explore more affordable options, the allure of a compact, budget-friendly EV like the Zhidou Rainbow may prove too strong to ignore.
You could say that following the Rainbow might even lead Tesla to a pot of gold.
