TikTok and Universal Music Group Strike a Deal, Bringing Top Artists Back to the Platform
In a significant turn of events, TikTok users can once again create clips featuring tracks from Universal Music Group’s (UMG) extensive catalog. The list includes chart-topping artists such as Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and Ariana Grande. This development comes after months of negotiations between the social media platform and UMG, culminating in a new content licensing agreement with undisclosed financial terms.
A Crucial Victory for TikTok
The deal arrives at a pivotal moment for TikTok, as the company faces the looming threat of being banned in key markets, including the United States. Securing this partnership with UMG is not only essential for bolstering its content offerings but also for enhancing its reputation among the consumers TikTok relies on for support. While the company has chosen to challenge the potential ban in U.S. courts, positive news like this can help strengthen its position.
Catalog Availability and Unmuting of Videos
TikTok users can expect the UMG catalog to be available for video creation within one to two weeks. Additionally, existing videos that had been muted due to the dispute will be unmuted once the catalog is accessible. As TikTok stated in a post, “Fans on TikTok can look forward to the return of UMG’s recorded music and publishing catalogs and once again enjoy creating videos using music from some of the world’s biggest artists and songwriters as well as exciting emerging talent.”
Taylor Swift’s Early Return
Interestingly, a selection of Taylor Swift’s music had already returned to TikTok last month, primarily because she owns the masters of some of her albums.
Statements from TikTok and UMG Executives
TikTok CEO Shou Chew expressed his satisfaction with the resolution, stating:
“Music is an integral part of the TikTok ecosystem, and we are pleased to have found a path forward with Universal Music Group. We are committed to working together to drive value, discovery, and promotion for all of UMG’s amazing artists and songwriters and deepen their ability to grow, connect, and engage with the TikTok community.”
Background of the Dispute
The agreement comes after UMG pulled its catalog from the short video platform earlier this year, refusing to renew its agreement with TikTok. In a separate move, UMG signed a new deal with Spotify for music videos.
As TikTok and UMG move forward with their renewed partnership, users can look forward to creating and enjoying content featuring their favorite artists once again.
