Understanding Net Neutrality
At its core, net neutrality is the principle that internet service providers (ISPs) should treat all online content equally, regardless of its source or nature. This means that whether you’re streaming a movie on Netflix, browsing articles on Wikipedia, or video chatting with friends on Skype, your ISP should not prioritize, throttle, or block any of these activities. Net neutrality ensures that the internet remains a level playing field, where innovation and free speech can thrive without interference from powerful gatekeepers.

The Threat to Net Neutrality
As the internet evolved from a niche curiosity to a critical economic and social force, ISPs began to see opportunities for profit in controlling access to online content. Without net neutrality protections, ISPs could create “fast lanes” for content providers willing to pay extra fees, while relegating everyone else to slower, less reliable connections. This would not only stifle competition and innovation but also give ISPs unprecedented power to shape public discourse and limit access to information.
The Fight for Net Neutrality
Recognizing the importance of an open internet, advocates for net neutrality have fought tirelessly to enshrine its principles in law. In 2015, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) took a significant step by reclassifying broadband internet as a Title II service, which allowed the agency to enforce strong net neutrality rules. However, this victory was short-lived, as the FCC, under new leadership, voted to repeal these protections in 2017.
Last year’s FCC decision to repeal net neutrality was arguably the most unpopular tech policy decision in the history of the modern internet. The repeal not only resulted in an unprecedented public backlash, but prompted numerous states to immediately begin exploring new legislation and legal challenges.

The Ongoing Battle
Despite setbacks, the fight for net neutrality continues. Advocates, including tech companies, consumer groups, and everyday internet users, have rallied to restore net neutrality protections through both legal challenges and legislative efforts. As the internet becomes increasingly central to our lives, the battle to ensure its openness and accessibility will remain a defining issue of our time.
The Federal Communications Commission is cracking open the net neutrality debate again with a proposal to undo the 2015 rules that implemented net neutrality with Title II classification.
