Hinge Introduces “Hidden Words” Feature to Combat Online Harassment
In an effort to reduce online harassment, the dating app Hinge has rolled out a new “Hidden Words” feature. This tool allows users to filter out likes containing specific phrases, words, or emojis, similar to mute filters on social media platforms.
How the “Hidden Words” Feature Works
When a user receives a like with a comment containing any of the words on their mute list, the profile is automatically moved to a separate “Hidden Likes” section instead of appearing in the regular like list. This setup is comparable to the message request inbox on platforms like Twitter/X or Instagram. Users can then review these comments and choose to delete the requests directly.
Customizable Word List and Future Expansion
Hinge allows users to add up to 1,000 hidden words, phrases, or emojis to their profile. Jeff Dunn, a representative from Hinge, revealed that the company has been testing various features for its safety toolkit, with “Hidden Words” being the first to be released publicly. He also suggested that the feature may expand in the future, potentially including chat filtering.
“We have a roadmap for Hidden Words that involves expanding its abilities, flexibility, and coverage. We are currently researching how we can improve the feature while also understanding what people want out of it with the first release,” he said.
Other Dating Apps Implementing Similar Features
Hinge is not the only dating app taking steps to reduce online harassment. Competitors like Bumble have also introduced similar features, such as their “Compliments” tool, which was launched in 2022.
As online harassment continues to be a prevalent issue, with a Pew Research Center study highlighting its prevalence, dating apps are increasingly focusing on providing users with tools to create a safer and more comfortable experience while connecting with potential partners.
