X, Formerly Twitter, Set to Launch Dedicated TV App for Video Content
New App to Feature Trending Videos and AI-Powered Topics
X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, is gearing up to introduce a standalone TV app that will showcase videos uploaded to the site. CEO Linda Yaccarino took to the platform to share the news, stating:
The new app will bring “real-time, engaging content to your smart TVs.”
The app’s user interface bears a striking resemblance to that of YouTube, as evidenced by a preview video shared by Yaccarino. Key features of the app include a trending video algorithm designed to keep users informed with personalized popular content and AI-powered topics that categorize videos by subject matter. Additionally, the app will support seamless cross-device viewing, allowing users to start watching a video on their mobile device and continue viewing it on their television.
Availability and Launch Date
While an exact launch date has not been specified, Yaccarino assures that the app will be available “soon” and will be compatible with “most smart TVs.” The introduction of this app aligns with Yaccarino’s vision to transform the social media platform into a free-speech, “video first” destination.
Original Shows and Canceled Deals
X currently hosts original shows, including one hosted by former congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and another by former Fox Sports host Jim Rome. However, last month, Elon Musk canceled a talk show deal with former CNN anchor Don Lemon after he was interviewed for the show’s inaugural episode.
Competition in the Live TV Streaming Space
The announcement of X’s dedicated TV app comes just a week after Truth Social, the social media platform owned by Donald Trump’s media company, revealed its plans to launch a live TV streaming platform. Truth Social’s platform will prioritize “news networks,” ”religious channels,” and content that has been “canceled” or “suppressed” on other platforms.
As X ventures into the realm of dedicated video content delivery, it remains to be seen how the app will fare in an increasingly competitive live TV streaming landscape.
