TikTok Shop Introduces Secondhand Luxury Category in the U.K.
Expanding Social Commerce Offerings
TikTok Shop, the social commerce marketplace integrated within the TikTok app, has recently launched a secondhand luxury category in the United Kingdom. This move positions TikTok Shop as a direct competitor to established resale platforms such as The RealReal, Vestiaire Collective, Depop, Poshmark, and Mercari. The secondhand luxury offering has been available in the TikTok Shop U.S. for more than six months prior to its U.K. debut.
Initial Brand Partnerships
The secondhand luxury category on TikTok Shop U.K. currently features five local brands: Sellier, Luxe Collective, Sign of the Times, HardlyEverWornIt, and Break Archive. These brands offer a curated selection of pre-owned high-end clothing, designer handbags, and accessories, all accessible within the TikTok app.
Addressing Counterfeit Concerns
One of the primary challenges faced by online resale marketplaces is the prevalence of counterfeit goods. Even major e-commerce platforms like Amazon and eBay have struggled with authenticity issues. To combat this, TikTok Shop has implemented an anti-counterfeit policy that ensures customers receive a full refund if a seller is found to have sold a counterfeit product. Additionally, Bloomberg reports that TikTok is collaborating with luxury goods company LVMH to develop strategies for minimizing counterfeiting on the platform.
Authentication Measures
In the U.S., secondhand brands on TikTok Shop are required to provide certificates from third-party authenticators. TikTok has partnered with authentication services like Entrupy and Real Authentication to verify the authenticity of designer handbags sold on the platform. In the U.K., the five participating brands have their own in-house authentication processes, as confirmed by a TikTok spokesperson to The Zero Byte.
Tapping into the Secondhand Luxury Market
The introduction of the secondhand luxury category on TikTok Shop U.K. is a strategic move to capitalize on the growing market for pre-owned luxury items. In 2023, an estimated $49.3 billion (€45 billion) worth of secondhand designer items were sold worldwide, highlighting the immense potential of this sector. Moreover, the popularity of secondhand fashion on TikTok is evident, with the hashtag #secondhandfashion garnering over 1.2 billion views across more than 144,000 posts.
Potential Impact of U.S. TikTok Ban
The expansion of TikTok Shop’s secondhand luxury category comes amidst ongoing concerns about the app’s future in the United States. The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a bill that would require ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to sell the app or face a ban in the country. If enacted, this ban could significantly impact American merchants selling on TikTok, as the platform generated $14.7 billion for small- to mid-size businesses in the U.S. in 2023.
