Apple Considers Granting EU Developers Access to iPhone’s Tap-to-Pay Technology
European Commission’s Antitrust Complaint
The European Commission recently accused Apple of abusing its dominant position in the mobile wallet market. The complaint alleged that Apple prevented third-party payment apps from utilizing the iPhone’s NFC (near-field communication) hardware, favoring its own solution, Apple Pay.
Apple’s Proposed Solution
In response to the European Commission’s antitrust complaint, Apple has proposed allowing third-party payment providers unrestricted access to the iPhone’s NFC capabilities. According to Reuters, the proposal would also grant developers access to Face ID for user authentication and enable iPhone users to set third-party apps as their default payment option.
European Commission’s Response and Potential Approval
The European Commission is expected to accept Apple’s offer in May, pending some requested changes. If approved, the proposal would remain in effect for a decade. However, it remains unclear whether Apple will extend these changes to developers outside the EU, as the company has not confirmed its plans for other regions.
