Truth Social Unveils Plans for Live TV Streaming Platform
In a recent press release, Truth Social, the social media platform owned by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s media company, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), announced its plans to launch a live TV streaming platform. The new service will prioritize content that has faced discrimination or suppression on other platforms, with a focus on news networks, religious channels, and family-friendly entertainment.
Three-Phase Rollout Strategy
The streaming service will be introduced in three distinct phases:
- Integration of Truth Social’s content delivery network (CDN) for streaming to the Truth Social app on Android, iOS, and the web.
- Release of over-the-top (OTT) streaming apps for various devices, including phones and tablets.
- Launch of a dedicated streaming app for television sets.
TMTG has revealed that the streaming service has undergone a six-month testing period on its web and iOS platforms, marking the completion of the research and development phase.
We’re excited to move forward with the next big phase for Truth Social. With our streaming content, we aim to provide a permanent home for high-quality news and entertainment that face discrimination by other channels and content delivery services.
TMTG CEO Devin Nunes expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming launch in the press release, emphasizing the platform’s commitment to providing a safe haven for content that has been marginalized elsewhere.
Competition with X’s Video-First Approach
The announcement comes amidst X‘s efforts to transform the social media site into a free-speech, video-centric platform under the leadership of Elon Musk. X currently features original shows hosted by notable figures such as former congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and former Fox Sports host Jim Rome. However, Musk recently canceled a talkshow deal with former CNN anchor Don Lemon after being interviewed for the show’s first episode.
Financial Challenges and Public Listing
Truth Social went public last month following the approval of a merger between TMTG and Digital World Acquisition, a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). Despite the company’s multi-billion dollar valuation, TMTG faces financial challenges, with a reported net loss of approximately $49 million in 2023 and revenue of just under $4 million. The company’s stock experienced a decline this week after announcing plans to sell more shares to raise additional funds.
As Truth Social ventures into the live TV streaming market, it remains to be seen how the platform will fare in an increasingly competitive landscape and whether it can overcome its current financial hurdles.
