DOJ Considers Antitrust Lawsuit Against Ticketmaster Following Taylor Swift Ticketing Debacle
Live Nation’s Ticketmaster Faces Scrutiny After Eras Tour Fiasco
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the Department of Justice (DOJ) is contemplating filing an antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation, the parent company of Ticketmaster. This potential legal action comes in the wake of the recent ticketing fiasco surrounding Taylor Swift‘s Eras Tour, which left countless fans unable to purchase tickets due to “unprecedented demand.”
Lawmakers and Fans Express Outrage Over Ticketmaster’s Practices
The ticketing debacle has sparked outrage among lawmakers and fans alike. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) has been particularly vocal, describing Live Nation’s business practices as the
“definition of monopoly.”
Despite President Joe Biden’s announcement last year that his administration would prioritize promoting competition in the ticketing industry, many believe that not enough action has been taken to address the issue.
Ticketmaster Defends Its Position Amid Antitrust Concerns
In response to the potential lawsuit, a Ticketmaster spokesperson told the Journal,
“Ticketmaster has more competition today than it has ever had, and the deal terms with venues show it has nothing close to monopoly power.”
This is not the first time the DOJ has investigated antitrust concerns in the tech industry. In 2019, the department launched an antitrust probe into Apple.
As the situation unfolds, fans and industry observers alike will be closely watching to see how the DOJ proceeds and what impact any potential legal action may have on the ticketing industry and Live Nation’s business practices.
