A Day in the Life of a Wind Turbine Technician

A typical day for a wind turbine technician involves assessing the health of the wind farm, addressing any issues, and performing routine maintenance. Much like a car, wind turbines require regular upkeep, such as greasing bearings, tightening bolts, and changing oil. It’s a labor-intensive job that often involves working with heavy components, but the industry is evolving to make the work safer and more ergonomic.

Career Paths and Compensation

Wind turbine technicians can choose to work for owner-operators, reporting to the same site daily, or as traveling technicians, taking on various projects for contract companies. Compensation varies depending on experience, location, and union membership, with hourly rates ranging from $25 to $65. The relative youth of the industry means there is ample room for growth and advancement for those committed to the field.

There’s this sense of newness still, and there seems to be so much opportunity for somebody who wants to make a career for themselves. You know, the sky is really the limit.
