Airchat: The New Social Media App Encouraging Users to “Just Talk”
Airchat, a recently relaunched social media app, is making waves in the tech world by prioritizing audio communication over text-based interactions. Led by AngelList founder Naval Ravikant and former Tinder product exec Brian Norgard, the invite-only app has already climbed to #27 in social networking on Apple’s App Store.
A Familiar Yet Unique User Experience
At first glance, Airchat’s interface may seem reminiscent of other social media platforms, allowing users to follow others, scroll through a feed, and engage with posts through replies, likes, and shares. However, the app sets itself apart by focusing on audio recordings, which are automatically transcribed for users who prefer reading.
Fostering Human Connection Through Voice
Ravikant and Norgard believe that voice communication is key to fostering genuine human connection online. Ravikant stated:
Humans are all meant to get along with other humans, it just requires the natural voice. Online text-only media has given us this delusion that people can’t get along, but actually everybody can get along.
The app’s asynchronous, threaded posts differentiate it from live chat rooms like Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces. Norgard argued that this approach removes the stage fright barrier to participation, as users can refine their messages without others knowing.
Attracting Introverted Users and Nuanced Communication
Early user conversations revealed that many of Airchat’s current users are introverted and shy. The app’s audio format allows for nuanced communication, conveying enthusiasm and intonation that may be lost in text-based transcriptions. It will be interesting to see how deadpan jokes and shitposting translate into audio.
Balancing Speed and Engagement
Airchat defaults to 2x audio playback, which some users may find unnatural. While the speed can be reset to 1x, longer posts may lead to skimming or skipping ahead. Finding the right balance between speed and engagement will be crucial for the app’s success.
Content Moderation and Monetization
While Ravikant believes in the power of voice to reduce acrimony, the app still employs complex rules to hide spam, trolls, and unwanted content. As for monetization, Ravikant, a significant investor in the company, stated:
I could care less about monetization. We’ll run this thing on a shoestring if we have to.
