Flipboard Strengthens Fediverse Integration, Embracing Open Source Social Web

Flipboard Strengthens Fediverse⁢ Connections with Expanded ‍Integrations⁢ and Notifications

Flipboard, a social magazine app from the Web 2.0 era, is doubling down on its efforts to embrace the open social web by deepening its ties to the fediverse.‌ The fediverse is a network of interconnected servers that includes apps like Mastodon, ⁣ Pixelfed, PeerTube,⁢ and soon, Instagram Threads.⁣ On Thursday,⁤ Flipboard announced two significant ‍developments: the expansion of‌ its fediverse integrations to⁤ 400 additional Flipboard creators and the introduction ⁣of fediverse notifications within the Flipboard app.

    Fediverse‌ Notifications⁢ in⁣ Flipboard

With the latest update, Flipboard users will now be⁢ able to view their new followers and other activity related ‌to the content they ⁣share in ⁢the fediverse directly within ⁤the Flipboard app. This follows Flipboard’s previous initiatives, such as replacing Twitter with⁣ a Mastodon integration and introducing support for ActivityPub, the protocol that powers decentralized social‍ networks.

Expanding Flipboard Creators’ Reach in the Fediverse

In February, Flipboard began adding its creators and their‌ social magazines to ⁢the fediverse, allowing the curated content typically shared within the Flipboard app to reach a wider audience. By sharing creators’ posts and links with the fediverse, Flipboard’s publishing partners gained⁤ their own native ActivityPub feeds,⁣ making them discoverable to users ⁢on Mastodon and other federated social apps. The initial push started with 1,000‍ Flipboard magazines, and today, an additional 400 have been added, bringing the total number of curated Flipboard magazines available to federated social networking users to over 11,000.

“This is a major step toward fully ⁤federating our platform,” noted Flipboard CEO Mike McCue in an announcement. “We’re not just making curated content on Flipboard viewable, but enabling two-way communication so‍ users can see activity⁣ and engage with fediverse communities.⁢ Personally, it has made⁣ my curation even‍ more exciting as I know it’s reaching new people who may share my ‍interests.”

    Eligibility and Opt-Out Options

The expanded set of federated accounts includes public accounts with one or ⁢two public magazines that have been curated within the past 30 days, have no trust and safety violations, and have participated in Flipboard community programs. Accounts will be notified‍ of their federated status via email. While Flipboard is working ‌towards federating users’ accounts by default, individuals‍ will have the option to “unfederate” by toggling off the “Federate” button in their ‍Flipboard settings.

Enhanced Fediverse ‍Experience in Flipboard ⁣App

With the latest version of the Flipboard app (ver. 4.3.25),‍ users will experience a more integrated fediverse experience. The Following⁢ tab ‍will now display new followers from the fediverse, while the notifications will include fediverse reactions and conversations. The notification window will be‍ divided into three sections: Replies, Activity, and ⁤News. In the ⁢Replies‍ section, users can view and respond to posts from both Flipboard and fediverse users, with their replies being sent back to the fediverse. The Activity tab will showcase likes, follows, boosts (the ‌fediverse equivalent of⁤ retweets), and other Flipboard ‍activity. The ‌News section ‍(formerly called Content) will feature breaking⁣ news and stories recommended by ⁣Flipboard’s editorial team.

    Curated Content for⁣ Fediverse Users

Flipboard has already been⁤ curating content for⁢ fediverse users through dedicated “news desks” (fediverse accounts) that share interesting articles and links across various topics. ‌These desks include a general news desk, as well as those focused on Tech, Culture, and‌ Science. This existing curation will help power the newly rebranded News section within the Flipboard app.
