Truecaller Introduces Web Version with SMS Mirroring and More for Android Users in India
Truecaller, the popular caller ID application, has unveiled a web version called Truecaller for Web. This new offering brings a host of features to the desktop, including SMS and chat mirroring, call notifications, and number search functionality. Initially, the web version will be exclusively available to Android users in India, with plans to expand support to other regions in the future.
Linking Devices and Session Management
Android users in India can now connect their devices to the Truecaller web client on a PC or Mac by scanning a QR code. Similar to linking the web version of messaging apps like WhatsApp or Telegram, Truecaller currently allows only one active web session and automatically signs out users after 30 days of inactivity. Users also have the option to manually de-link a browser from their settings.
SMS and Chat Mirroring: A Delayed but Convenient Feature
Although Truecaller is quite late in introducing SMS and chat mirroring, especially compared to Microsoft‘s Phone Link functionality for both Android and iPhone users on Windows, this feature could still provide users with added convenience. It allows them to quickly reply to texts or access one-time passwords (OTPs) for login purposes directly from their desktop.
Enhanced Number Search and Real-Time Caller ID Notifications
While Truecaller already offers users the ability to look up phone numbers on its website, albeit with some rate limits, the web client now enables users to search for numbers without any such limitations. Additionally, the web client displays real-time caller ID notifications when a user receives a call.
AI-Powered Features and Recent Updates
In recent months, Truecaller has been focusing on introducing more AI-powered features. Last month, the company launched a “Max” feature update for Android users, which uses AI to block all calls from unapproved contacts or detected spam. In February, Truecaller also introduced call recording and AI-powered transcription features in India, following its initial launch in the US last year.
Financial Performance and Stock Recovery
Despite registering lower revenues for the quarter, which led to a 32% stock dip in October 2023, Truecaller’s stock has since recovered from its low price of SEK24.47 ($2.32) and is currently trading around SEK31.68 ($3) at the time of writing.
With the introduction of Truecaller for Web and its ongoing focus on AI-powered features, the company aims to enhance user experience and convenience, particularly for its substantial user base in India.
