Genius: MLK/X: An In-Depth Look at Civil Rights Icons

The latest season of Nat Geo’s Genius series delves into the lives of civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and Malcolm X (Aaron Pierre). Echo: A Spotlight on Marvel’s Fearless Female Characters

Marvel’s latest series, Echo, centers on Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), a deaf character first introduced as an antagonist in Hawkeye. For sci-fi enthusiasts, the holiday season is synonymous with new Doctor Who specials. In 2023, the 60th anniversary specials, featuring Catherine Tate and David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor, along with Ncuti Gatwa‘s debut as the new Doctor, premiered on Disney+ in the US. The specials see Tennant’s Doctor facing off against the Toymaker (Neil Patrick Harris), while Gatwa is joined by Millie Gibson as new companion Ruby Sunday.

    Unleashing Nightmares with R. L. Stine’s “Goosebumps”

For over three decades, R. L. Stine’s “Goosebumps” books have been a staple of young readers’ bookshelves, fueling their imaginations with delightfully terrifying tales. Now, Disney is bringing these spine-chilling stories to life in a new series that follows a group of high school students as they unravel a sinister mystery surrounding a long-forgotten murder in their seemingly idyllic hometown. With Justin Long portraying a potentially possessed teacher in season 1 and David Schwimmer joining the cast for the upcoming second season, “Goosebumps” promises to be a thrilling ride for horror enthusiasts of all ages.

Unraveling Time and Mischief in “Loki”

While firmly rooted in the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), “Loki” stands on its own as a delightfully entertaining series. Tom Hiddleston brings depth and complexity to the titular character, navigating a labyrinth of plot twists, witty banter, and time-bending escapades. With a jaw-dropping visual effects budget and a scene-stealing alligator sidekick, “Loki” offers a refreshing and engaging addition to the MCU. Although the future of a potential third season remains shrouded in mystery, even for Hiddleston himself, fans eagerly await further adventures with the God of Mischief.

    Exploring the Galaxy with “Ahsoka”

In a galaxy far, far away, “Ahsoka” emerges as a pleasant surprise for longtime Star Wars fans. Rosario Dawson reprises her role as Ahsoka Tano, a former Jedi apprentice of Anakin Skywalker, which she first portrayed in “The Mandalorian” season 2. The series follows Ahsoka on a quest to find Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen), a cunning strategist with ambitions of galactic domination. As anticipation builds for the confirmed second season, “Ahsoka” promises to be a thrilling journey through the Star Wars universe.

Reimagining a Classic in “The Wonder Years”

In 2021, writer-producer Saladin K. Patterson breathed new life into the beloved series “The Wonder Years,” reimagining it for a new generation. Narrated by Don Cheadle, the show chronicles the coming-of-age story of Dean Williams (Elisha “EJ” Williams) as he navigates adolescence in Montgomery, Alabama, during the twilight of the Civil Rights Movement. With both seasons now available for streaming, this poignant and timely reboot is a must-watch.

Igniting Imagination with “Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire”

While “Black Panther” received its official sequel with “Wakanda Forever” in 2022 (which is, of course, available on Disney+), “Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire” offers a fresh and captivating exploration of the vibrant world of Afrofuturism. This enchanting animated anthology brings together a diverse array of African creators, each contributing their unique vision and storytelling prowess to craft a mesmerizing tapestry of tales set in a futuristic Africa. With its stunning visuals and thought-provoking narratives, “Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire” is a celebration of the continent’s rich cultural heritage and a testament to the boundless potential of its future.

    Uncovering Secrets in “Secret Invasion”

“Secret Invasion” has garnered attention for its use of AI-generated art in its opening credits, a decision that has divided fans. However, the series itself offers an intriguing premise, with Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn reprising their roles as Nick Fury and Talos, respectively. The duo investigates a covert invasion of Earth by the shape-shifting Skrulls, an alien race with the ability to blend in seamlessly with human society. The addition of acclaimed actors Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke to the Marvel Cinematic Universe only adds to the allure of this suspenseful series.

Rocking Out with “The Muppets Mayhem”

Muppets fans, rejoice! “The Muppets Mayhem” puts the spotlight on the beloved Electric Mayhem Band, as Dr. Teeth and his eccentric bandmates embark on a quest to record their debut studio album. Aided by a determined music executive played by former YouTube sensation Lilly Singh, the gang’s musical journey is sure to be filled with laughter, heart, and plenty of catchy tunes. While the series is limited to a single season, it promises to be a joyful and nostalgic ride for Muppets enthusiasts of all ages.

Illuminating Heroism in “A Small Light”

While the story of Anne Frank is well-known, the life of Hermine “Miep” Gies, Otto Frank’s secretary and one of the five Dutch citizens who helped hide the Frank family, is often overlooked. “A Small Light,” a powerful miniseries from National Geographic, aims to change that. Bel Powley delivers a moving performance as the young Miep, a woman who bravely stands up for what is right, no matter the consequences. This poignant series sheds light on an unsung hero and serves as a reminder of the incredible impact one person can have in the face of adversity.

Blending Coming-of-Age and Mythology in “American Born Chinese”

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” co-stars and Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan reunite for “American Born Chinese,” a captivating Disney+ original series. The story follows Jin Wang (Ben Wang), a typical teenager navigating the complexities of high school social hierarchies. His life takes an unexpected turn when he becomes a mentor to Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu), a foreign exchange student harboring extraordinary secrets. As Jin discovers Wei-Chen’s true identity as a celestial being on a mission from the heavenly realm, the series masterfully weaves together elements of a coming-of-age tale and mythological fantasy. Based on Gene Yang’s graphic novel, this single-season series offers a fresh and engaging narrative that celebrates the Asian-American experience.

Reimagining the Galaxy in “Star Wars: Visions”

“Star Wars: Visions” breathes new life into the Star Wars universe by offering a diverse collection of creative and innovative stories. The first anthology, released in 2021, showcased nine installments from renowned Japanese anime studios, each bringing their unique style and perspective to the galaxy far, far away. The second anthology, which arrived in 2023, expanded its reach to include works from studios in India, Ireland, Spain, Chile, France, South Africa, the United States, and the United Kingdom. For fans seeking the most inventive and visually stunning Star Wars tales, “Visions” is an absolute must-watch.

    Bounty Hunting with “The Mandalorian”

“The Mandalorian” has proven to be a game-changer for the Star Wars franchise, capturing the essence of classic television with its episodic adventures and memorable cameos. Set in the outer reaches of the galaxy, the series follows a stoic, masked Mandalorian bounty hunter (Pedro Pascal) as he navigates a treacherous landscape while protecting a mysterious child known as Grogu, or “Baby Yoda” to fans. With its captivating storylines, stunning visuals, and stellar performances, “The Mandalorian” has become a cornerstone of the Star Wars universe. Fans eagerly await the fourth season, set to begin production later this year, promising even more thrilling adventures in a galaxy far, far away.

Exploring the Origins of a Rebel in “Andor”

“Andor” is a remarkable addition to the Star Wars canon, created by acclaimed filmmaker Tony Gilroy, known for his work on “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and the “Bourne” series. The series serves as an origin story for Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), one of the most beloved characters from “Rogue One.” Set in the early years of the Rebellion, “Andor” traces the character’s journey to becoming a vital member of the Rebel Alliance. With a stellar supporting cast that includes Fiona Shaw and Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd, and a haunting score by Nicholas Britell (“Moonlight,” “Succession”), “Andor” stands out as a prime example of prestige television within the Star Wars universe.

Empowering a New Generation of Heroes in “Ms. Marvel”

In “Ms. Marvel,” Disney successfully merges its talent for creating engaging coming-of-age stories with its stewardship of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iman Vellani shines as Kamala Khan, an Avengers-obsessed high school student from Jersey City who often feels like an outsider. When a mysterious gold bangle arrives from her grandmother in Pakistan, Kamala begins to realize that her countless hours spent dreaming of a life with superpowers may have been preparing her for a greater purpose. As Marvel’s first Muslim superhero, “Ms. Marvel” represents a significant step forward for the company in terms of innovation and inclusion. Vellani’s portrayal of Ms. Marvel has already made the leap to the big screen, starring alongside Brie Larson in “The Marvels,” further cementing the character’s place in the ever-expanding MCU.

Embarking on a Galactic Adventure with “Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures”

Set during the High Republic era, centuries before the events of the Skywalker Saga, “Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures” introduces a new generation of heroes to the Star Wars universe. The series follows a group of young Jedi Padawans as they embark on thrilling missions, master the ways of the Force, and learn valuable life lessons under the guidance of their wise Jedi instructors. With its vibrant animation style, heartwarming stories, and emphasis on the core values of the Jedi Order, “Young Jedi Adventures” serves as an ideal entry point for young viewers to discover the magic and wonder of the Star Wars galaxy. As these aspiring Jedi face challenges, forge friendships, and grow in their understanding of the Force, they inspire audiences of all ages to embrace their own heroic journeys.

Disney+ continues to be a treasure trove of captivating series, offering something for everyone. From gripping documentaries and spine-chilling horror to reimagined classics and groundbreaking original content, the streaming platform consistently delivers high-quality entertainment. As viewers explore the vast array of stories available, they are sure to find themselves transported to new worlds, inspired by heroic journeys, and captivated by the magic of storytelling.

A Galaxy of Entertainment: Exploring the Best of Disney+

    Young Jedi Chronicles

If nurturing the next wave of Star Wars enthusiasts was even a minor factor in your decision to have children, this freshly launched animated series is the perfect starting point for their journey. Imagine a Star Wars rendition of Rugrats, set during the High Republic era, roughly two centuries before The Phantom Menace. It revolves around a group of young Jedi apprentices who occasionally stumble while learning the ways of the Force. Like any quality children’s series, it imparts valuable life lessons about making a positive impact on the world.

    The Legal Adventures of She-Hulk

Tatiana Maslany, no stranger to complex characters or portraying multiple facets of a single role (see: Orphan Black), takes her skills to new heights while ramping up the hilarity in She-Hulk. As Jennifer Walters, cousin of Bruce Banner/The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), she shares that infamous green gene. This proves advantageous for both Walters and viewers when she’s given the opportunity to lead a new division at her law firm, focusing on cases involving “superhumans” like herself. While Maslany could effortlessly carry the show solo, a star-studded supporting cast, including Ruffalo, Jameela Jamil, Tim Roth, and Benedict Wong, enhances the enjoyment and solidifies the show’s position in the MCU.

    Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Redemption

Ewan McGregor, who hasn’t always spoken kindly of the Star Wars prequels in which he first portrayed Obi-Wan Kenobi (a role he inherited from Alec Guinness, who also had his share of unfavorable remarks about the franchise), surprised many when Lucasfilm announced his return to the Jedi robes for a standalone Disney+ series. In many respects, it allowed McGregor and former co-star Hayden Christensen to course-correct some of their earlier work, as it follows a disheartened Obi-Wan grappling with his personal and professional disappointment over losing Anakin Skywalker (Christensen) to the Dark Side.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has already said there will not be a second season.

    The Beatles: Unfiltered

In January 1969, just over a year before announcing their breakup, the Beatles granted a film crew unprecedented access to the creative process and recording of Let It Be, their final studio album. Five decades later, Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson was given nearly 60 hours of film footage and more than 150 hours of audio from this project, which he remastered and transformed into a captivating three-part docuseries. Whether you’re a die-hard Beatles fan or not, the documentary offers a fascinating glimpse into the creative journey of one of music’s most influential bands as they race against time to complete an album, decide to perform a free rooftop concert, and occasionally clash. Knowing what the subjects do not—that this will be their last time recording an album or performing live together—adds to the project’s poignancy. The miniseries swept all five of its Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.

Moon Knight: A Marvel of Multiple Personalities

Oscar Isaac brings another marquee name to Marvel’s growing list of all-star talents with Moon Knight. Isaac portrays a man with dissociative identity disorder, giving us three distinct characters: mercenary Mark Spector, British gift shop employee Steven Grant, and the enigmatic and seemingly sinister Jake Lockley. Ultimately, he must confront himself to find the answers he seeks. Isaac told Empire that he was excited to do something “really fucking nutty on a major stage” with Moon Knight—and he delivers.

The Book of Boba Fett: A Bounty Hunter’s Tale

As with The Mandalorian, Jon Favreau helms this Disney series, in which the criminally underappreciated bounty hunter of the Star Wars films finally gets his moment in the spotlight. The series is a spinoff of The Mandalorian and takes place in the same time frame, after the events of Return of the Jedi. This explains why Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and his partner Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) are trying to seize control of the underworld once ruled by Jabba the Hutt.

The Muppet Show: A Classic Reborn

While The Muppet Show, which aired for five seasons between 1976 and 1981, is now considered a television classic, creator Jim Henson faced challenges along the way. Henson produced two standalone Muppet specials intended to bring the show to prime time, but neither came to fruition. Luckily, the Muppets had a recurring segment in “The Land of Gorch” sketches during Saturday Night Live‘s inaugural season, which, when it became a hit, provided Henson with evidence of a potentially vast audience for an adult-oriented Muppet show (not to mention celebrity connections to attract numerous A-list hosts). The rest is Muppet history.

    The Punisher: Vengeance and Vigilantism

The Punisher, another Netflix-turned-Disney+ Marvel series, is a spinoff of Daredevil. Like Daredevil, the Punisher (real name: Frank Castle, played by Jon Bernthal) is a vigilante who seems to relish exacting revenge, regardless of the consequences. He and Daredevil inhabit the same universe, and while the Punisher somewhat admires Daredevil’s pursuit of true justice, Daredevil abhors the Punisher’s by-any-means-necessary approach. Bernthal brings an intensity to the role that, while undeniably violent, also possesses a sense of humor.

Boy Meets World: Growing Up in the ’90s

If ABC’s TGIF lineup wasn’t part of your Friday night routine as a kid, you clearly didn’t grow up in the ’90s. But Disney+ is here to rectify that by hosting all seven seasons of the teen sitcom in its library. Corey Matthews (Ben Savage) navigates the ups and downs of growing up and the ever-changing relationships with friends and family—plus that one teacher, Mr. Feeny (William Daniels), who always has the right answer to your problems, whether you like it or not. As the show progressed and the characters matured, serious issues like drugs and sex were introduced, which didn’t always sit well with the network. When the show aired on the original Disney Channel, a few episodes were omitted due to the more mature subject matter. You can also check out all three seasons of Girl Meets World, the sequel series that follows Corey and Topanga’s daughter, Riley, as she embarks on her own coming-of-age journey.

    Unravel the Mystery of WandaVision

Prepare to be captivated by the slow-burning sitcom parody, WandaVision. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprise their roles as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Vision, living an idyllic life in a 1950s suburban dreamscape. As the mystery unravels, the show’s connection to the wider MCU becomes clear. Though a second season isn’t planned, fans can look forward to the Agatha Harkness spinoff, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, in late 2024.

Though there will not be a second season, fan-favorite Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) is getting a spinoff, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, which is expected to drop in late 2024.

Witness the Legacy of Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

After the reality-bending WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier brings us back to familiar territory with an action-packed thriller. Join the Rebellion in Star Wars Rebels

Follow the adventures of a group of rebels led by former Jedi Kanan Jarrus (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and his force-sensitive Padawan, Ezra Bridger (Ezra Gray). With fan-favorite Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) as a regular character, this four-season series masterfully fills in the gaps between the prequel and original trilogies.

    Embark on a Simpsons Marathon

Prepare for a marathon of laughter with all 34 seasons of The Simpsons on Disney+. As one of the longest-running and most iconic animated TV shows ever created, this series offers endless entertainment. While the first season may feel a bit dated, and debates persist about the show’s golden age, there’s no denying the wealth of content available for your viewing pleasure.

Relive the ’90s with X-Men: The Animated Series

For a nostalgic trip back to the ’90s, look no further than the critically acclaimed X-Men: The Animated Series. This cartoon heavily influenced the first two films in the live-action X-Men franchise, showcasing the incredible potential of rich source material.

Dive into the World of S.H.I.E.L.D.

For die-hard Marvel fans, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a must-watch. This seven-season series focuses on the less super agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., led by Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg). While the first season takes some time to find its footing, the show hits its stride in the second and third seasons, weaving a complex plot that ties into the MCU films.

Experience the Thrilling Adventures of Agent Carter

Despite its short run, Agent Carter is a gem that deserves more attention. Hayley Atwell reprises her role as Peggy Carter from the MCU films in this 1940s-set series. Follow Peggy as she balances her duties as a US government agent with helping Howard Stark (Tony’s father) navigate various predicaments. With only 18 episodes across two seasons, this series is a quick but worthwhile watch.

Witness the Rise of Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: The Clone Wars

This series chronicles Anakin Skywalker’s transformation from a headstrong Padawan to a powerful Jedi Master. Not to be confused with Genndy Tartakovsky’s equally impressive 2003 animated series, Star Wars: Clone Wars.

Explore Alternate Realities in What If…?

Marvel’s What If…? is an animated series that explores alternate timelines within the MCU. Narrated by The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), an extraterrestrial being who observes the multiverse, each episode presents a different scenario that diverges from the events of the films. With actors from the movies reprising their roles, including Josh Brolin as Thanos, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Karen Gillan as Nebula, this series offers a fresh perspective on familiar characters and storylines. The second season arrived in late 2023, promising even more mind-bending adventures.
