Poe Introduces Per-Message Pricing for AI Chatbot Creators
Poe, the AI chatbot platform owned by Quora, has unveiled a new monetization model that empowers bot creators to set a per-message fee for their creations. This move follows the platform’s earlier introduction of a revenue-sharing program in October 2023, which granted bot creators a portion of the revenue generated when users subscribed to Poe’s premium offering.
A Hub for AI Chatbot Exploration
Launched in February 2023, Poe serves as a centralized hub where users can explore and interact with a diverse array of AI chatbots, including those developed by industry leaders such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. The platform aims to provide consumers with a user-friendly environment to experiment with cutting-edge AI technologies while simultaneously offering Quora a potential source of fresh content.
Rewarding AI Enthusiasts and Developers
Poe’s revenue models present an innovative approach to the creator economy by rewarding AI enthusiasts who develop “prompt bots” and developers who build server bots that seamlessly integrate with Poe’s AI infrastructure. This initiative encourages the growth of a thriving ecosystem of model developers and bot creators who can build upon existing models.
Per-Message Pricing Goes Live
Although Quora had previously announced plans to introduce per-message pricing for bot creators “soon” after the launch of its revenue-sharing program, the feature has now been implemented, nearly five months later. As explained by Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo, Poe users will only see message points for each bot, which aligns with the points they have as either a free user or a Poe subscriber. However, creators will receive their payments in dollars.
Today we’re introducing a new way for model developers and bot creators to generate revenue on @poe_platform: price per message! Creators can now set a per-message price for their bots and generate revenue every time a user messages them.
D’Angelo emphasized the importance of this pricing mechanism for developers who incur substantial model inference or API costs, stating that covering these operational expenses is crucial for fostering a thriving ecosystem of model developers and bot creators.
Spurring Innovation and Global Expansion
The introduction of the per-message revenue model is expected to drive the development of innovative bots across various domains, such as tutoring, knowledge sharing, personal assistance, analysis, storytelling, and image generation. Currently available to U.S. bot creators, the offering will expand globally in the future, complementing the existing creator monetization program that pays up to $20 per user who subscribes to Poe through a creator’s bots.
Enhanced Analytics Dashboard
In tandem with the launch of the per-message revenue model, Poe has introduced an enhanced analytics dashboard that provides creators with daily insights into their bots’ average earnings across paywalls, subscriptions, and messages. This tool will enable creators to better understand how their pricing strategies influence bot usage and revenue generation.
