X Introduces Passkey Support for iOS Users Worldwide
X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, has announced the global rollout of passkey support for all iOS users. Passkeys, a more secure alternative to traditional passwords, were initially introduced to U.S. iOS users in January.
Widespread Adoption of Passkey Technology
Numerous popular apps and services, such as PayPal, TikTok, WhatsApp, GitHub, and Google, have already integrated passkey technology. Major tech companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon also support this login method.
How Passkeys Work
Developed by Google, Apple, Microsoft, the FIDO Alliance, and the World Wide Web Consortium, passkeys aim to provide passwordless logins across various devices, operating systems, and web browsers. Instead of using a username and password, passkeys rely on biometric authentication (e.g., Face ID or Touch ID), a PIN, or a physical security key to validate logins. This approach combines the benefits of two-factor authentication (2FA) into a single, seamless step while enhancing security.
Enhancing Account Security on X
The introduction of passkeys on X could help users safeguard their accounts against hacks and unauthorized access. In recent years, the platform has experienced several high-profile security breaches, such as:
- The U.S. Securities and Exchange’s X account sharing an unauthorized post about Bitcoin ETF approval in January.
- Donald Trump Jr.’s X account being hacked to post a fake message claiming that Donald Trump had passed away.
- A 2020 crypto scam that compromised many large accounts, including those of Apple, President Biden, and X owner Elon Musk.
Addressing the Removal of SMS 2FA for Non-Paying Users
Last year, X announced the removal of SMS 2FA for non-paying users, citing potential abuse by bad actors, such as in the case of SIM swaps. While X argued that this cost-cutting measure could enhance security, it ultimately made the platform less secure for many users. The addition of passkeys could help these users re-secure their accounts.
X has provided instructions on how to get started with passkeys on iOS. However, there is no information yet on when Android users will have access to this feature.
