TikTok’s Upcoming Instagram Rival App Might Be Called TikTok Notes
Pop-Up Notifications Hint at the Name
Recent screenshots shared by users on various platforms suggest that TikTok’s forthcoming app for sharing photos, which is set to compete with Instagram, could be named TikTok Notes. Over the past few days, TikTok users have been receiving pop-up notifications about this new app, stating that their existing photo posts will be shared on the platform unless they choose to opt out.
TikTok Confirms App Development
While TikTok has confirmed that the app is currently in development, they have emphasized that it is not yet available to the public. A spokesperson from the company told The Zero Byte:
As part of our continued commitment to innovating the TikTok experience, we’re exploring ways to empower our community to create and share their creativity with photos and text in a dedicated space for those formats.
Placeholder Marketing Image Discovered
In addition to the pop-up notifications, a TikTok-owned URL, photo.tiktok.com, displays a placeholder marketing image with the text “Open in TikTok Notes.”
Previous Indications of a Photo-Sharing App
Last month, code and language discovered in the TikTok APK file, an installable file format for Android, indicated that the company had been working on launching a photo-sharing app called TikTok Photos. However, the recent pop-ups within TikTok suggest that the company may be considering a different name for the app.
Competition Between TikTok and Meta
As TikTok prepares to launch its photo-sharing app, the competition between the ByteDance-owned platform and Meta continues to intensify. While TikTok is venturing into photo-sharing, Meta recently introduced a vertical-first video player for Facebook to compete with TikTok’s video format.
TikTok’s Experimentation with Different Formats
In addition to the upcoming photo-sharing app, TikTok has been experimenting with various formats, such as 30-minute-long videos and text posts similar to X and Threads. These moves demonstrate the company’s efforts to diversify its content offerings and maintain its position as a leading social media platform.
