Google Unveils AI-Powered Travel Planning Features and Personalized Recommendations
Search Generative Experience (SGE) Update
With the summer holiday season approaching, Google is introducing a range of travel updates that position the company at the heart of the travel planning process. The most notable addition is an update to its Search Generative Experience (SGE), which harnesses the power of AI to help users create personalized travel itineraries and generate trip ideas.
Currently available in English to U.S. users enrolled in the Search Labs program, this new feature draws inspiration from websites, reviews, photos, and user-submitted details about destinations worldwide. For instance, if a user asks, “plan me a three day trip to Philadelphia that’s all about history,” the AI will generate a sample itinerary featuring attractions, restaurants, and an overview of flight and hotel options, organized by time of day.
Google has not commented on when or if it might roll this out more widely. But it points to how the company is experimenting with how and where it can apply its AI engine.
While the itineraries are currently non-actionable, users can export them to Gmail, Docs, or Maps once they are satisfied with the plan. This update not only showcases Google’s experimentation with AI applications but also gathers valuable data on travel purchasing intent and user appetite for such services.
Enhanced Recommendations in Google Maps
Google is also making it easier for users to discover lists of recommendations in Google Maps for select cities in the U.S. and Canada. When searching for a city in Maps, users will now see curated lists of places to visit from publishers like The Infatuation and other users. Additionally, curated lists of top, trending, and hidden gem restaurants will be available in over 40 U.S. cities.
Customizable Lists for Personalized Travel Planning
To further enhance the travel planning experience, Google is introducing new tools that allow users to customize their lists. This feature enables better organization of travel plans and easier sharing of favorite spots with friends and family. Users can now arrange the order of places in a list, prioritizing by top favorites or creating a chronological itinerary. Moreover, users can link content from their social channels to their lists.
As Google continues to innovate in the travel sector, these updates demonstrate the company’s commitment to providing users with personalized, AI-driven solutions that streamline the travel planning process and offer valuable insights for both travelers and the travel industry as a whole.
