Wild Bastards: A Stylish Shooter with a Western Twist
Void Bastards Spiritual Successor
Back in 2019, I discovered a unique shooter called Void Bastards that instantly captivated me with its graphic novel art style and catchy name. Despite the perfect weather for outdoor activities, I found myself glued to my computer, devouring the game in just a few sittings. Its sci-fi setting, roguelite systems, and smooth shooting mechanics had me hooked.
Fast forward to this year’s Game Developers Conference, where I had the opportunity to demo Wild Bastards, a spiritual follow-up to Void Bastards. While not a direct sequel, this new title takes the familiar formula and infuses it with a Western flair, feuding teammates, and a unique bean-trading mechanic.
Navigating the Interstellar Map
In Wild Bastards, players navigate an interstellar map with a team of outlaws, collecting loot and engaging in arena-based shootouts along the way. The demo began with a planetary map featuring branching paths, some safer than others. One risky choice resulted in the loss of an equippable upgrade. The game progresses in a board game-like manner until reaching a planet to beam down onto.
Managing Outlaw Egos and Relationships
Wild Bastards takes team management to the next level by introducing interpersonal relationships between outlaws. As the run progresses, crew members may grow closer or develop animosity towards one another. To resolve conflicts, players must trade beans, a resource found on planets, to smooth things over between feuding teammates. The game also encourages players to rotate their crew, as outlaws with full energy bars receive buffs when taken on missions.
Planetary Exploration and Combat
Upon landing on a planet, players are presented with another board game-like setup where they must navigate their crew towards loot while battling rival outlaws blocking key paths. Landing on enemy spaces triggers first-person combat encounters in small arenas, showcasing the importance of crew selection.
Each outlaw functions as a unique gun loadout that can be switched on the fly. For example, pairing a long-range sniper with a jetpack and a close-range character with flaming lob shots offers a complementary playstyle. The arena battles are short and fast-paced, reminiscent of the stylish combat found in Void Bastards.
Anticipation for Release
I can’t wait for my next weekend binge when the full release launches on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch this year.
With the promise of gameplay modifiers like lightning storms and other surprises, Wild Bastards aims to deliver the same engrossing roguelike experience that made Void Bastards such a hit. I eagerly await its release on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch later this year.
Capcom Addresses Negative Feedback on Dragon’s Dogma 2 PC Port
Despite a positive critical reception, Capcom‘s recently released Dragon’s Dogma 2 has been met with a wave of criticism from PC players. The game currently holds an overwhelmingly negative user score on Steam, with over 13,000 reviews at the time of writing. In response to the growing frustration among PC gamers, Capcom has addressed the most common complaints in an effort to alleviate the situation.
Microtransactions and Performance Issues
One of the primary sources of player discontent is the inclusion of microtransactions across all versions of the game. Additionally, the use of Denuvo anti-cheat software, known for its potential to negatively impact game performance, has further exacerbated the issue. While performance problems were already noticeable on Xbox Series X/S, they appear to be even more pronounced on PC. Despite the game’s demanding minimum required PC specifications, many players are experiencing frequent frame rate drops, crashes, and freezing. Some have resorted to unconventional methods to improve performance, such as eliminating NPCs.
Unlocking the Secret of Auto-Pickup in Rise of the Ronin
Team Ninja‘s latest title, Rise of the Ronin, marks a significant departure from their previous Nioh series in terms of structure. Unlike the smaller stages found in Nioh, Rise of the Ronin features a vast open world for players to explore. However, the two games share a common thread: challenging combat and an abundance of loot. As you traverse the countryside and engage in battles, you’ll amass hundreds of items every hour. While mission rewards are automatically added to your inventory, regular items require manual collection. Fortunately, there is an auto-pickup option available, despite the game’s lack of communication about it.
Mastering Combat: The Top Vocations in Dragon’s Dogma 2
In Dragon’s Dogma 2, your chosen Vocation determines your combat role, dictating your skills, weapons, and armor. While you’ll initially choose from a limited selection, you can easily switch Vocations later on and unlock more than double the starting options. Discovering the perfect Vocation that suits your playstyle and maximizes your potential as an Arisen can be a time-consuming process. Here are the Vocations that offer the greatest potential to transform you into the most formidable Arisen in history.
The Top Vocations in Dragon’s Dogma 2
- Warfarer: The ultimate jack-of-all-trades, capable of wielding any weapon and learning skills from other Vocations.
- Mystic Spearhand: A hybrid Vocation that combines melee prowess with magical abilities, offering crowd control and single-target damage.
- Warrior: A tank-like Vocation that wields massive swords and excels in raw power, but struggles against flying and ranged enemies.
- Sorcerer: The premier choice for pure mages, boasting the most potent offensive spells at the cost of longer casting times and lower health.
- Thief: A fast and agile starting Vocation that remains viable throughout the game, specializing in critical hits and climbing large enemies.
